One of my career goals this year was to speak publicly about things that matter to me. Today I helped train newsrooms on how to welcome new hires and consider personal bias with these incredible orgs. – at Washington, DC

Every once in a while, traffic spikes on this FAQ I did about the #Hmong several years ago. I assume this time it's because people are reading about Sunisa Lee and wanting to know more about Hmong people. Here it is if you're interested in learning more: mprnews.org/story/2015/03/01…
There's still time to apply for NPR's @nextgenradio program at KUER! This program laid the groundwork for my career in media and gave me chance to explore a different medium. If you're a student in Utah or a recent grad, apply! And please reach out if you have any questions.
Alumna @katherinekellis & @palak_jayswal from Next Generation Radio share their thoughts on their time with the program. Applications close on Friday, July 16. #NPRNextGenerationRadio buff.ly/35YKUDx

My last story for @KUER was just published. Feeling bittersweet about this milestone, but glad I got to shine some light on this awesome project. I think it's a fitting way to end two years of reporting aimed at highlighting the good in San Juan County.

It's still AAPI Heritage Month! Here's a story that might surprise you: Did you know there used to be a Japantown in Salt Lake?
"People should know that we are a multicultural society here in Salt Lake and we've been a multicultural society here for over 100 hundred years.”
“It was a kind of erasure of whatever Japanese-American community existed."
Salt Lake City's Japantown was largely destroyed to build the Salt Palace in the 60s.
🌸Now, community leaders are working with the city to revitalize what's left of it.🌸

The @UUtah is launching a workshop this summer for teachers to update their curriculum around Indigenous people and culture. The 4-week program will help develop more culturally respectful and accurate lessons about the country’s Indigenous people.

Oh this thread 👏

You want someone to cover a brand new, under-covered beat and help you fill a necessary hole in your newsroom? Commit to them. Develop them. Pay them a reporters salary, and help them flourish. Don’t relegate them to a temporary job and praise yourself for doing so.
I know sometimes webinars can seem like just *another* thing to do in the time of zoom, but consider joining @currentpubmedia's Local that Works Webinars! @mariana_dale is an excellent host and in today's webinar, @d_holli was so inspiring.
I always love reading stories about other mixed race people, particularly ones that don't shy away from the messiness involved in straddling two worlds. But I especially didn't want this one from @alexlaughs to end! harpersbazaar.com/culture/fe…
It's traumatic enough to live through mass shootings, police brutality, hate crimes and a global pandemic. But like @OliviaMesser says, "It's perhaps less clear to those inside and outside of the news industry that this is also true for the journalists who tell the stories."

We heard you. There's so much in the Membership Guide (membershipguide.org) that you needed a cheat sheet. So we launched a newsletter course w/@lenfestinst! Each week for 13 weeks you'll get 1 lesson from the Guide, starting 5/5. Learn more here. bit.ly/newsletter-course

Roughly 300,000 people in Utah are paying off student loans according to an analysis from the website Student Loan Hero. About 37% of them would have their loans erased completely under President Biden’s proposal to cancel $10,000 per borrower. kuer.org/education/2021-05-0…
