Today was our last day of stream tables for our soils, rocks, and landforms unit. The final focus was to bioengineer a way to prevent erosion from occurring. It was fun to see problem solving in action with this, along with the creativity! #owatonnaproud

We did chemical weathering as well today. We used vinegar to simulate “acid rain”. They made predictions and tested them out to see which rocks would have a chemical reaction and break apart.

This week we started, The Circulatory Story, in Wit and Wisdom. We kicked off the day by doing an experiment by observing our pulse. Fourth graders located their pulse, placed clay on it, and watched as the qtip moved like a meter to the beat of their heart.

Science started this week with an investigation of our school soils! Fourth grade students collected soil samples at our nature center from different areas such as field, marsh, and forest. They examined their finds for organic matter, substrate, and more. #Owatonnaproud

We added water today, shook the samples, and watched how the contents settled. It was cool to see how different they were based on where they collected.

Building our classroom community by doing a chalk talk on how we can treat ourselves, our peers, our teachers, and our substitutes. These are always my favorite posters to kick off the classroom culture.

As we are learning about environments, 4B students did a light vs dark test today to see what habitat the mealworms gravitated to. By the end of the experiment, most of them ended up on the dark paper!

Last week, 4B students started their investigations on the mealworm life cycle. They’ve loved documenting the changes they’ve noticed, feeding them, and testing out different habitats (I.e. cold, dark, warm, light). They’re excited to see what they transform into!

4A spent their first day of science learning the basics of a closed circuit. They looked at diagrams of circuits and made predictions whether or not they would work. Then, went to test on their own by creating a closed circuit to light a filament bulb.

A #chalktalk is an engaging way to get learners to share their thoughts and evidence collaboratively without talking! When we finish, we examine the posters and share things we see, give feedback, and use it to help further our learning!
