Guess I’ll do this since @Colleenallreds tagged me. While she’s riding the rails from the city (like the New Yorker she is), I’m hopping the bus from Nutley. No lines. No crowds.

Just to be clear:
The NYNJ host committee - a bistate nonprofit planning a soccer tournament in East Rutherford, NJ - bought 1,000 World Cup tickets at full freight and gave them to New York City to give to their residents for $50.
And gave 0 to NJ.

Both FIFA and the Murphy administration walked back the “free” public transportation requirement in 2024 — when @northjersey was the only one reporting on this and had the contracts and addenda.

Let this also be a PSA to support local news
FIFA have responded to this - and strongly.
“We are quite surprised by the NJ Governor’s approach today on fan transportation. The original FIFA World Cup 2026 Host City Agreements signed in 2018 required free transportation for fans to all matches. Recognizing the financial strain this placed on the host cities, back in 2023 FIFA adjusted the Host Agreement requirements across all host cities as follows: All Match Ticket holders and accredited individuals shall be able to access transport (public or additionally planned transport) at cost to allow travel to Stadiums on match days.
“FIFA worked for years with host cities on transportation and mobility plans, including advocating for millions of dollars in federal funding to support host cities for transportation.
“FIFA World Cup will bring millions of fans to North America along with related economic impact. Many fans will travel to NYNJ to enjoy the eight matches scheduled. FIFA is not aware of any other major event previously held at NYNJ Stadium, including other major sports, global concert tours, etc., where organizers were required to pay for fan transportation.”

Eight members (six Dems, two GOP) as the meeting is called back into order. This is still yesterday’s meeting so no roll call will be taken and anyone here yesterday could have left a vote for bills being considered tonight.
NJ’s State Senate Budget Committee is scheduled to start a meeting at noon with an extensive agenda, including the FY26 budget…. but they don’t appear to be starting as the judiciary meeting continues.
The committee is taking a “very very short” break still has several bills to consider, in addition to the budget.
Budget meeting started shortly before 2 and chairman Paul Sarlo announced that the budget won’t be brought before the committee for some time. He said 6 or 7 at the earliest or it “might be” tomorrow.
