Bombshell: Retired court officer Brian Burke, seen here with #RexHeuermann at serial killer’s June sentencing, tells @Newsday the killer confided he began having “murderous urges” in 1970’s as a teen. Makes me wonder about cold cases from late 70’s/early 80’s. #Gilgo #LISK

Front-page news — and the power of forensic art to help solve cold cases. A few weeks ago on NewsNation Live, I interviewed forensic artist Joe Mullins about the remarkable work he’s doing with the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) and forensic art students to help put faces to unidentified victims. Now that work is on the front page of Newsday. (Also, news today on John Bittrolff, asking an appellate court to overturn his convictions in the 1993 and 1994 murders of Rita Tangredi and Colleen McNamee) On identifying victims: Using advanced 3D scanning and printing, skulls of unidentified victims can be replicated so forensic art students can create facial reconstructions — giving investigators another tool to generate leads, identify victims and potentially bring answers to families who have waited years, even decades. This work has particular significance here on Long Island, where cold cases — including unidentified victims connected to the Gilgo Beach investigation — Asian Doe - remain a priority for law enforcement. Thank you, Joe, for joining me on NewsNation Live / Investigation Nation and taking us inside this fascinating collaboration between forensic science, art and cold case investigation. Every victim deserves their name back. #ColdCases #ForensicArt #ForensicScience #OCME #UnidentifiedVictims #MissingPersons #GilgoBeach #LongIsland #TrueCrime #ColdCaseInvestigation #NewsNation #InvestigationNation

Searching for Asian Doe: collecting cheek swabs 🚨NEW ACTION tonight in NYC’s Chinatown with Suffolk County D.A. Ray Tierney and volunteers from the Gilgo Beach Homicide Task Force who will be present at the NYPD’s fifth precinct National Night Out to encourage members of the Chinese community to attend and assist members of law-enforcement in identifying the last unknown homicide victim found along Ocean Parkway during the Gilgo Beach investigation. I spoke with D.A. Tierney about tonight’s event that will include Chinese speaking members of law enforcement to assist in the task force’s efforts - he tells me, he’s looking forward to this event saying “we’ve received great coordination from NYPD, and Suffolk County PD both with Chinese speaking officers who are going to help us with this. We think that we will get a lot of people out, and hopefully get some DNA samples” The idea, is to bolster DNA samples. Suffolk County officials share: The best way to assist is by providing a DNA sample, which will assist genealogists with identifying possible relatives, and in turn, identifying Asian Doe. Notably, the DNA samples will not be retained by law enforcement and will not be entered into any law-enforcement databases. Rather the sample will go straight to a private laboratory and used solely for the purpose of identifying “Asian Doe," as well as any other unidentified human remains of Asian descent.  The Gilgo Homicide Task Force implore members of the public to step forward and assist us in identifying this young victim.  In addition, a reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information leading to the identification of Asian Doe. Information may also be provided by visiting suffolkcountyda.org/cold-cas… or by calling (631) 263-0526 Video of Chinatown shot while on a court break at the Nicolas Maduro hearing.
