A brilliant piece on the fallen elephant by @kamdararjun who had the fortune of spending some memorable moments with the tusker during the course of his work.

Lovely coverage of our recent work!
Elephants are more than giants of the wild—they are guardians of their kin. As human-wildlife conflict escalates, perhaps there’s a lesson here: if elephants can protect each other, maybe humans can learn to do the same. eastmojo.com/assam/2024/12/1… @kamdararjun
Grateful to the team that made this possible: @assamforest, @WWFINDIA, @Cambridge_Uni, @IUCN_AsESG, @wti_org_india & more! @nitskar, @Airawat, @hbaishya1, @samshulwildvet, @kushalkonwar1, A Sarmah, N Kalita, D Smith, P Kakati, R Saikia, B Mazumder, R Basumatary. 5/n
Findings like these remind us to see wildlife as emotional and social beings, remind us that conservation must also look at their quality of life, not just survival — for instance, reducing their unnecessary harassment in shared landscapes.🐘🌏 4/n
These findings illustrate the social intelligence of elephants—empathy, coordination, and altruism. This adds to growing evidence that elephants and other non-human animals are thinking, feeling individuals with unique personalities! 🌱 3/n
On two separate occasions, one in Sonai Rupai WLS and the other in Addabarie Tea Estate, we witnessed a completely unanticipated event: an adult male elephant intervening to assist the sedated female.
Despite the team’s presence, they pushed the females out of sedation! 2/n
🐘 New Research Alert: Our latest study in Biotropica reveals altruistic behaviour in wild Asian elephants in northeast India!
We document adult males rescuing sedated females during our GPS-collaring efforts, providing an insight into their complex social lives 1/n
Very excited for this!
Read and see how you can help three community leaders foster human-elephant coexistence in the floodplains of northeast India!
