Now that all the tools look the same, everyone is going to realize that design is art and that's always been the whole point.
I love feeds full of summaries of other people’s ideas. It’s important for us to retell truths, especially old truths, in our own words so we can internalize and integrate those ideas into our ways of living and create shared culture.
Sometimes you just gotta color some little boxes on a sheet of graph paper and it makes you feel better.
Had some good conversations this week about work and hobbies. Lots of folks don’t know I was a photographer before I was a designer. It was necessary for me to step back from photography, but I do miss it. Here’s a shot from our trip to the redwoods last month.
It is a little wild to me that not a single mention of Canva was made at @valiocon. 20x the user base of Figma. We didn’t talk about it at all.
I know designers aren’t their target, but it’s still crazy to me that the majority of design is happening in tools we don’t talk about.
Check the exchange between Brian and @rsms here.
This is the type of chat you might find between very senior designers in a private Slack at a high performance design org. Very cool exposure to the types of detailed interaction design discussions that drive high quality work.
I added a hovercard on related links in Shiori's reader that shows you exactly where that link appeared in the source text so you have full context.

@hobdaydesign and I loved this article so much we decided to chat about it this week on Complementary. A must read if you haven't yet!

I wrote an in-depth article on how I made @cursor_ai’s icons. Read it if you want to know:
- How to keep 600+ icons consistent
- Why I made optical adjustments nobody can see
- Why the icon stroke weight is 1.25px (who does that, really?)
- Why I drew 156 almost identical versions of a hamburger icon
…and much, much more!

At the high school I attended it was unacceptable to get below 80% on tests. If you did, you repeated that section of curriculum and retested. Parents were way more involved, we didn't have a single kid flunk out, and most of us got college prep diplomas.
How do we “fix” parents not caring about what their kids are doing at school?
Bring back academic probation.
You have one quarter to get your GPA above 2.0. If you fail, you’re out of school and FULLY your parents’ responsibility.
Let teachers grade honestly again and bring back probation and things will change so fast they’ll make your head spin.
Do the huddled masses recognize AI design?
I know designers can spot it, but my hunch is that the normies can’t.

Anthropic: We are going to kill you
OpenAI: We are going to kill you first
Apple: now you can fold iPhone
Non-tech people don’t care about tech. They care about information, status, shelter, food, and other things that matter for their survival and happiness.
The fact that AI is nascent and we are still early doesn’t mean normies will start caring. Both things can be true.
How do you make great software??
You ask “what would make it perfect?” and then spend years chipping away at the answer.

If you want to be a good visual designer you must first sit in the control center of a military submersible and accept the ephemeral medium in which you build. The modern interface is a facsimile of the world that came before.
UI has no fixed or permanent essence. All things are temporary and all code must inevitably become debt. And in that realization you’ll find true levity in the craft.
