OTD - July 5, 1947 - Larry Doby became the first Black player in the American League. Despite the daily impacts of racism, Doby went on to be the first Black player to hit a home run in the World Series en route to his Hall of Fame career. He deserves to be celebrated @mlb

Larry Doby made his historic debut for Cleveland on this date in 1947, becoming the first Black player in the American League. Doby faced many of the same challenges as Jackie Robinson, who reintegrated the NL in April, but his courage was second to none. ow.ly/Yj9e50WlczI

Today, we celebrate the 78th anniversary of Larry Doby breaking the AL color barrier. Facing the same challenges as Jackie Robinson, and debuting just a few months later, Doby's courage and bravery is more than worth celebrating. 👏 #GuardsBall

Facts
Album of the day. You'd have to be a true R&B enthusiast to know Adriana Evans and her 1997 self-titled debut album. One of the overlooked artists to emerge during the "neo-soul" boom, Evans truly fit the bill of a singer's singer with a pristine, jazz-inflected voice that echoed the sophistication and verve of female soul singers from the mid-to-late 1970s. She and producer Dred Scott produced a sound that was distinctly classic and modern, one that mostly married live instrumentation with uptown hip hop sensibilities: elegant strings, striking woodwinds and brass, and rugged, hearty percussion work. Somehow, none of it sounds like homages to any past influences either, thanks in part to Evans' pure voice and the breezy production that anchors the set. Why an album that effortlessly rode into different lanes is largely unknown and underacknowledged by the masses speaks to the meager promotion the now-defunct Loud Records gave it. Already something of an anomaly on a hip hop-based label, Loud didn't know how to market Evans' boundless, grown-up flavor alongside the street-centric tastes that raged on Black radio at the time. It's quite a shame, as it still holds up far better than several praised R&B releases from that time.

Oh goody, another cause to campaign for: let's make #DobyDay official. I guess it's time for MLB to receive another round of Effa Manley inspired letters.
Today, we celebrate #DobyDay! On this date 78 years ago, Larry Doby broke the color barrier in the American League. While @MLB has an honorary day for Robinson, Gehrig, and Clemente, Doby doesn't receive league-wide recognition - yet. Here's why that should change. 🧵

#EffaManley did that!
Today In 1947: The Cleveland Indians acquire Larry Doby from the Newark Eagles of the Negro National League! In two days he'll become the first Black player in American League history! ⚾️ #MLB #Baseball #Legend

Effa Manley negotiated on behalf of the Eagles. And then used her portion of the proceeds to buy herself a mink coat. 30 years later, she was still rocking it at the Negro Leagues reunion. My fictionalized account is in my novel #InALeagueOfHerOwn.
Larry Doby’s contract with the Newark Eagles was purchased by Cleveland 7/3/1947. It was the first time a Negro League contract was bought out. Branch Rickey took Jackie without speaking to the Monarchs. Doby broke the AL color barrier. Lots of interesting stuff in this paper.

#InALeagueOfHerOwn includes Effa Manley's negotiations that resulted in Larry Doby becoming the 2nd Negro Leaguer to play MLB, and the 1st to play in the AL. She also became the 1st Negro League team owner to be compensated by a MLB team for the loss of talent.
Larry Doby added another chapter to his baseball legacy #OTD in 1978. After making history as the second Black player in AL/NL history, he became the second Black manager when he took the helm of the White Sox. ow.ly/JOUs50WiiSl
