As every year passes, more of our lives are lived online. And while this brings tremendous benefits, it also brings great risks. The benefits we've gained in the spreading of knowledge, social connectivity, productivity, entertainment, and a million other conveniences are paid for with a never-ending erosion of privacy and control over our digital lives. But when we stop to question whether the loss of privacy has gone too far, we're met with the common refrains "Privacy is for criminals. If you nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear" and "privacy is already dead, why bother?" But is this really true? Is privacy just for criminals? Is privacy simply an outdated notion, soon to be a relic of the past? Should we just be grateful for what we've been given and close our eyes to the hidden dangers of our hyper-surveillance state? Is there no other way? To answer these questions, we've spent the last year researching the complicated story of privacy. Along the way, we came across the inspiring work of so many people already blazing the path to a digital world where privacy is preserved and cherished. Those like @Snowden who risked everything to warn us of the dangers and inner workings of the mass surveillance machine. Activists and thinkers like @mer__edith and @shoshanazuboff who enhance our understanding of the economic and political roots of the surveillance state we live in. Builders like those behind @zcash, @brave, and @signalapp who show us privacy and technology don't have to be enemies. Communicators like @naomibrockwell who work tirelessly to help people understand privacy and share with them the tools to protect it. And so many others. And after all this research, we found that privacy isn’t dangerous and it’s not dead - it’s necessary. It’s essential for our mental health. For our freedom of expression. To protect us from abuses of power. To protect us from criminals. To create a fairer economy. And best of all, we learned that a future with privacy is possible. So to share with you what we've learned, we’ve brought all of our research to life in a series of videos packed with straightforward explanations, stories, animation, and expert interviews so that everyone can understand why privacy is important and what a future with privacy could look like. We hope you enjoy and share the trailer for our series. Our first video comes out on June 30th.
