Half of US M2 buyers are still choosing the manual and that might be exactly why BMW M can’t kill it yet. The problem isn’t demand. It’s everything around it. BMW’s current six-speed manual is already limited by the torque it can handle. Developing a stronger one costs money. Manual transmission suppliers are disappearing. Then there’s the added complexity of 48V systems. So BMW is stuck in a strange position: Customers are saying, “Give us the third pedal.” Engineering is saying, “That’s getting harder.” And the M division is basically saying, “We’re still trying.” The M3 CS Handschalter selling out in roughly a week doesn’t exactly make the manual look dead either. If BMW can find a way to make the numbers work, they should keep it alive. Because once the third pedal disappears from M cars, bringing it back won’t be easy.
