Heard and spoke to a few people lately who’ve started wondering whether their earlier wins were actual edge or just luck carried by a faster market. Slow markets force that reckoning, they make you see what was real and what was just noise.
And this is why you hear time in the market beats timing the market.
Not as a slogan, but because being around long enough strips away illusions. Different environments expose your process. You learn what truly holds up when the tailwinds disappear.
If you’re feeling that discomfort now, use it. Ask yourself:
- Which parts of your process worked across different environments, not just during one hot meta?
- Were you sizing based on conviction or because the market was generous and forgiving?
- How many of your "thesis" trades were actually just following attention flows?
- Are the traders who had similar edges still performing, or did their results disappear once the environment changed? If they stayed and kept winning, why? did they adapt, why didn't you?
- Did you win more from your reads or from being early to narratives that required almost no skill?
- And which parts of your playbook still work today when liquidity is thin and attention is selective?
Answering these with honesty is how you rebuild a cleaner more durable edge.
Most people only ask these questions after they blow up. If you’re asking them now, you’re already ahead.
