Is there a better baseball play by play guy than Brian Anderson? Consistently meets the moment, but it's more than that. Along with Darling and Francouer, he doesn't hammer us with Baseball Savant bullshit. Too many broadcasts get bogged down in math class.

The Rays believe in Strike one. They hit the FB. They run the bases well. They play good defense. Bottom half of order know who they are and execute. Move runners if they need to. More importantly they don't strike out!! Sometimes people complicate this game. They keep it simple

This is what happens when you nickel and dime an offense. Remember the 2008 Red Sox that came back from 7-0 down vs. the Rays to send the ALCS back to Tampa? Their lineup featured Coco, Pedroia, Ortiz, Youkilis, Drew, Bay and Varitek. That's an offense. This is a prayer.

We already knew it here, but @LouMerloni has been effing great on the national broadcast this week. Ahead of the former catcher and first baseman in the booth on Contreras manning the wrong side of the bag on that pivotal K/WP.

*Unbelievable* Randy Moss story from Kevin O'Connell about one of the first passes he threw ever in an NFL practice. I don't want to ruin the punchline. "It's not very often you get your welcome to the NFL moment on your first throw of pat-and-go, practice 1." 😂

Some personal news: You won't be reading, seeing, or hearing me for a bit. Before last Pats season, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. My goal was to do the full season. I did, then re-weighed treatment plans. Recent scans showed additional cancerous areas. Time for surgery... xitter.cf/cgasper/status/2061784…

Catching up on Celtics, and Mazzulla ran the Bryce Drew play to get Pritchard the 3 in OT before Gonzalez tied it. Mazzulla might not remember that play from the 1998 NCAA tourney (he was 9), but Brad Stevens definitely does. m.youtube.com/watch?v=U3qpzl…

Mazz is correct! Previous long was 11 pitches vs. Alex Presley in 2011. Chapman doesn't go double digits very often. Just the sixth time in his career (3300+ batters).
I seriously wonder whether Aroldis Chapman has ever thrown 12 pitches in an at-bat against anyone. Until this year, he's never thrown strikes well enough. Somebody MUST have a way to find this out.

My advice to Craig Breslow on organizational communication issues: talk like a normal person. We all know how smart he is, but he's obsessed with sounding the part. Learn from Theo Epstein, who's brilliant but conversational. Breslow was engaging as a player, so it's in there.

Had I a Substack, my headline would be, "Why I love the Devers trade," just for a click, followed by a more balanced take that I'm happy to ditch the contract and rid the clubhouse of a selfish player, but wish the return wasn't so meager. Whatever. Still a fan of the deal.

There's little doubt the plan is to redistribute Devers' money to Anthony, Mayer, et al. Devers had proven he wasn't a franchise player in any way except with the bat. (which isn't nothing, but still) He was never going to be Big Papi. Too introverted and immature.

Don't underestimate the impact of Devers' continued recalcitrance *after* John Henry's visit. When the owner puts himself out there and your behavior doesn't change, suddenly Breslow doesn't have to work so hard to sell the idea of a trade.

Hey, I wrote something! If you caught any Wemby highlights this year, you heard silky smooth Spurs broadcaster Jacob Tobey, a Suffolk grad and Sandwich native who's a self-made success story. Read his journey in the spring edition of Suffolk Mag. suffolk.edu/news-features/su…

Dear @Bertuccis, I haven't measured yet, so I could be wrong, but I don't believe these slices are of equal size.
