Anyone born with the gift of speech will always have better life outcomes than the people born with the gift of writing. Both can be learnt, but everyone has their preference.

The nice thing about reading is that if an author is bad I can put their book down and walk away. If they are good, I can spend hours with them. Can't do this with conversation.

What better encapsulates an empty spirit than seeing a painting and then ask, how does this serve me?

I don't think you can trust someone who can't revisit their work and enjoy it for pleasure. Eg, a director who doesn't like rewatching their films or a musician who can't stand listening to their own music. The "greats" are usually their first audience member.

Better care is to be had in what books we reread than in the ones which may have had an impact on our lives, but were only read once or twice.

Funny how Seneca and Schopenhauer complained about the noise each had to deal with, but compared to us, they would never trade places.
Take earplugs everywhere Environments routinely above 85 dBA > restaurants > sporting events > social gatherings > gym and theater > trains and subways > coffee shops Can't currently fix hearing loss. Hearing loss accelerates brain volume loss and cognitive decline.

Don't know what's worse: someone writing 40 books in 10 years or that they get those books published.

“It would be a good thing to buy books if one could also buy the time to read them; but one usually confuses the purchase of books with the acquisition of their contents. To desire that a man should retain everything he has ever read, is the same as wishing him to retain in his stomach all that he has ever eaten. He has been bodily nourished on what he has eaten, and mentally on what he has read, and through them become what he is..” Schopenhauer

Curious how novelists describe finding ideas, like character or plot details, as things waiting to be discovered. They were already there. Yet mathematicians will say the same thing for a given pattern or identity. Maybe this says more about us than it does about ideas.

To some people the conventional life, though much easier as a path to take and comes with many rewards in this society, is too mild, too dissatisfying, and hides beneath it many regrets. Some people want more, and they are willing to take the risk to get it.

I try to be a man of my word, and after a year of looking for good places, building this is the best compromise I could find. It's not ideal, but right now I can't support myself doing this, so it's a short term relief. However I now have a place to publish my work again, which has had a consistent output for 4+ years. And despite the numbers or having my writing deleted off other sites, I will continue for as long as I can. The first (new) project has already been released, although it was supposed to come out last December - a 17,000+ word dialogue. I think there are too many essays in general, and we need something different, so the first part has been uploaded but the rest will follow soon. None of this is a big deal. It's not a book, business project, or scientific result; nor are my ideas and writing for everyone, but I intend to publish more in the years ahead and the support helps a lot. I'll share the link in a comment to avoid the usual blocks.
Thinking about publishing my work online again. Somewhere. Hard to find any places who've solved the distribution problem.

If a writer has 100+ articles but nothing has been well received, they generally choose one of two options. Either they go the commercial route, changing what they write to the tune of the audience. Or they keep writing from within, because they have something to say which comes from a source they cannot explain. Most times it's obvious who is going to take what path.

There are elements to the human voice which let us trust a person more than if we've only engaged with them via text. A conversation with an author can build a relationship in a way that reading their book cannot. This is why posting is not enough and why podcasts tend to work.

For someone who's in the arts, sciences, or scholarship of some kind, there is no "business". The business is them. They can't abandon their work because it's a bad idea or doesn't accumulate customers. If they did, they would have to abandon themselves.
