Gen X pro-tip, (almost) teenagers evidently don’t think it’s a compliment when you tell them their overalls are cute and they look like an extra from the “Come On Eileen” video.

Popping up from Twitter hibernation to say hello because it’s my TWENTIETH Penguin anniversary. How did that even happen? (I could really use a nap. Really really.)

So, (a brief) hello! Still WFH. My favorite things include hedgehogs, hammocks, candy, drag, brilliant books, and making my managing editor happy (on rare occasion). I currently have a broken leg that I did not acquire in any sort of cool or sporty way. Do not recommend.

Some very special new book news to share today. Coming May 18, 2021.
Hi, it's John. The Anthropocene Reviewed book (!!!!!) is now available for preorder. (There will also be an audiobook, read by me.) The book contains expanded reviews from the podcast, and several new reviews. I am very nervous/excited. I hope you like it. penguinrandomhouse.com/books…

This may be the most intuitive and engrossing review of anything I ever did. And it makes me very proud.
Denial is a form of power, a means of maintaining the invisibility and normativity of whiteness. @katcapshaw of @UConn explores a new #YA novel that emphasizes white characters’ complicity in privilege and racism. buff.ly/2CHubpv

Adding a full 30 minutes to an already-2 hour commute is just miserable.

Anonymous Penguin colleague who shared a huge bag of candy in the kitchen... you're my favorite.

I just pounded repeatedly on the light switch in my office, increasingly worried about why the lights wouldn't turn on. Was hitting "off." It's going to be a long day.

I’m too well acquainted with the after-hours routines of 1745 Broadway. Unfortunately, these never involve snacks.

As adorable as I find myself for being fetishy about the just-right editing pen, it's a real pain when the ink is starting to run dry...

If it wasn’t going to happen today, the best parking spot at the train station was never to be mine. Still, so close. And woot 4:54! In related news, I’ve hit an all-new low on life goals.

“We’ve been wondering who would order ONE purple folder.” - cashier at the Staples next to my office who has been spared the 2019-20 5th grade classroom supplies list.
Things you never knew about me.
