Now at Wigmore Hall for Wolf’s ‘Italienisches Liederbuch’ - all 46 songs - performed by Katharina Ruckgaber, Johannes Kammler and Imogen Cooper.

This is a bit of a fiasco. The songs are not being sung in anything like the order that they’re printed in the programme , and the much -lauded subtitles are missing, most of the time. The surtitler is as confused as the rest of us.

Imagine being able to figure out how to “make a car fly” but not being able to figure out how to feed hungry children with a trillion dollars.

A slightly surreal moment in the restaurant when a waiter brought over some ‘birthday’ ice cream ( I guess it was mine a fortnight ago) and a woman walking past - who I’m 90% certain was Kay Burley from Sky News - smiled and said ‘happy birthday!’ 😆

My view wasn’t the best, but I could certainly hear that this was an excellent performance of Handel’s lesser-known ‘Scipione’. The English Concert, directed by Harry Bicket, is one of my favourite Handel bands and they were on top form last night

The single vocal highlight of the evening, for me, was provided by the young British tenor Archie Inns, who sang his slow aria in Act 3 with beautifully honeyed tone and impeccable style. He had the audience in the palm of his hand. He is one to watch!

The Senesino role was taken by Xavier Sabata, who used his warm, rounded countertenor with elegance & an easy virtuosity; and there was excellent singing in supporting roles from the charming Carolyn Sampson and rising bass-baritone Thomas Chenhall.

One of the best baritones on the planet. Gutted to be missing this, but I’m being zapped by lasers that day.
