Red hot take: The cost of new nuclear just dropped 10-20%.
BREAKING IN NYC: WORLD'S BIGGEST BANKS PLEDGE SUPPORT FOR NUCLEAR Banks and funds totaling $14 TRILLION in assets have just signed an unprecedented statement in support of nuclear power. They'll be presenting the pledge to support the goal of tripling nuclear THIS MORNING at the Rockefeller Center in New York City to kick off NY Climate Week. A few of the names: Bank of America Barclays BNP Paribas Brookfield Citi Credit Agricole Goldman Sachs Morgan Stanley Rothschild & Co The pledge comes after Microsoft signs deal to buy $16 billion in electricity from a revived Three Mile Island nuclear plant alone over 20 years to fuel its AI ambitions. I'll be covering live today from the top of the Rockefeller Center, famously built with oil profits, as this unprecedented show of support for the next great energy source overcomes long-held financing barriers.

Preference cascade. Every time someone says they appreciate nuclear’s benefits and we should be using more of it, new people feel unlocked to say the same thing.
Most of my timeline today is about nuclear… what is going on?

One of 🇫🇷's most strategic projects has just begun in the Rhône valley: Orano is investing €1.7 billion to expand its uranium enrichment plant. Once extended, the plant will produce enough uranium to supply 120 million homes with electricity. The aim: to produce more enriched uranium to supply nuclear power plants 🇫🇷, 🇪🇺 & 🇺🇸 and no longer rely on external supplies, particularly from 🇷🇺. Enrichment is a crucial stage in the nuclear fuel cycle: it increases the proportion of fissile isotopes in uranium, making it suitable for use in nuclear power plants. Currently, 4 major producers share the global enrichment market: - 2 Western enrichers (Urenco and Orano), - 1 Russian enricher (Rosatom) - and 1 Chinese enricher (CNNC). The Russian and Chinese markets are closed to Western suppliers. Worldwide, Urenco has 31% of production capacity, Orano 12% and Rosatom 43%. The planned investment will increase the capacity of Orano's Tricastin enrichment plant (which already produces 12% of the world's enriched uranium) by a third. The plant not only supplies EDF, but also foreign markets such as the nuclear power plants of 🇰🇷. In all, the plant will cover an area of 100,000 m2. Commissioning is scheduled for 2028. With its recent investments in uranium mining, enrichment and spent fuel recycling, Orano is a crucial player in the revival of the nuclear industry 🇫🇷. Oh wow. We're getting tantalisingly close to an enormous nuclear industry milestone here (first disposal of high level waste). Not as glittery as a bright shiny new reactor, but crucial to industry prospects and sustainability
The first stage of the Trial Run of Final Disposal at Posiva’s final disposal facility has been completed successfully. 💪It started with the cannister complete and the transfer of a test transport cask for spent nuclear fuel.🛞 Read more: posiva.fi/first-stage-of-the… #ONKALO

Yeah, “fusion is not ‘nuclear’” and it is done in ‘machines’, not reactors. It’s pure coincidence that the machines force atomic nuclei to undergo reactions that release nuclear energy. 👍👍
Fusion and fission are opposite processes, which has major implications for regulation and licensing. More on this from our Regulatory Policy Lead, Andrew Proffitt: helionenergy.com/articles/wh…

In the past word games might have been helpful to fusion companies. Fusion often had a halo of public support when nuclear overall might not. But now a majority of people and politicians support nuclear generally - why be silly and distance yourself from that growing momentum?!

Coalitions of pro-nuclear countries that share democratic values. That’s what we need to roll out as much nuclear as we can, as fast as we can across the free world and in doing so shape the future of nuclear. I wrote as much a two years ago. neimagazine.com/uncategorize…
South Korea wants to bolster ties with the US to sell more nuclear reactors 🇰🇷🤝🇺🇸 “To win more of these nuclear projects overseas, both Korea and the US would benefit more if we pursue profit sharing," said Korea Electric's CEO bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Oklo's founders, the AltC sponsors, and largest shareholders have long term lockups on their equity. What that means is that the $306 million of gross transaction proceeds is fully focused for Oklo to execute our business plan including deploying our Aurora powerhouse. In a recent CNBC interview, our CEO, Jacob DeWitte, explains our business model and strategy, highlighting our focus on selling power directly to customers under long-term contracts to ensure consistent, recurring revenue and robust cash flow. cnbc.com/video/2024/05/10/nu…

I should tweet more about AI and that way have fewer outbursts on the topic

We need to stop this trend of AI acting human before it starts. People must be able to tell immediately when they are interacting with a machine and not another person. We have to legislate this sooner rather than later.

I've felt this way since about 2008 when South Western Railway started using an automatic sorry-saying machine to feel bad on its behalf over delays. In those says it was an ironic annoyance; it has now become dangerous.

It's a serious question of which world we want to live in. While any technology can be abused, it's easy to imagine how bad things could be if we fail to set a framework of even basic honesty around AI.
