I have tried to get in the habit of timing texts to my kid to arrive when she’s *not* in class. Lunchtime or after school.
Parents,
Stop texting your kids during class while they’re at school. If it’s that important you can call the main office. But now you’re taking away from my classroom time and the time of 35 other students because you can’t follow the rules and law yourself. So knock it off.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Respectfully
Mr. Akers

I'm being asked by many users how they can verify images and videos of the conflict in the Middle East, including many fakes that are going viral.
This is a thread I wrote exactly three years ago with a step-by-step guide on verifying online images that anyone can learn to do.
Please don't do this.
The current Grok model is absolutely horrible at fact-checking images or videos.
Fact check and ask questions about any post just by tapping the Grok logo in the upper left
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Grok logo is on the upper right.

I've been doing this work for over a decade and covered multiple conflicts, but I don't remember a time when open source investigators and fact-checkers have been this busy.
The sheer scale of this war between the US, Israel and Iran, the volume of major daily incidents happening across the Middle East that need to be investigated, and the rampant spread of misinformation on social media are beyond any one person's capacity to cover.
And that's why the ever increasing community of online investigators, geolocaters, and fact-checkers on this platform are vital to understanding major global events like this war.
Make sure to follow their work!

Dawn Staley shares a coaching and parenting truth that most people get wrong.
"I'm very different than your parents because your parents don't want you to fail, and they don't want you to be uncomfortable."
You can't steal the struggle for others.
"They do everything in their power to make sure you don't feel the pain that they felt growing up. And it's probably the biggest mistake because they're gonna fail."
Love isn't protecting someone from struggle - it's preparing them for it.
"I tell them, 'I love you enough to allow you to fail.' I do."
"I love you enough to allow you to hurt. I love you enough for you to have a bad game or bad month or even a bad season."
You can't grow without failures, mistakes, and setbacks. That's where true growth happens.
"And that's not just basketball, that's just anything. You're gonna have bad days that you're gonna have to just fight."
The greatest gift you can give someone isn't comfort. It's the ability to handle discomfort.
Optimize for resilience, not comfort. That's what prepares them for anything.

Statement from the family of Alex Pretti, Michael and Susan Pretti:
“We are heartbroken but also very angry.
Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman.
The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed.
Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you”

MAGA,
You know this is wrong. You feel cheap and empty trying to defend it. This isn’t what you voted for. This isn’t what you were promised.
Today is your off-ramp. Your way out. An opportunity to say, “yeah, I’m done with this.” You don’t even have to say anything. Just go.

Social media as we know it is collapsing.
I generated a synthetic person, fed her image into Kling’s new motion control engine, paired it with my reference video, and voila.
With a few dollars and a few minutes, anyone can create entirely new synthetic identities or, worse, convincingly impersonate real people.
We’re already past the tipping point.

I study authoritarianism for a living, so I do not say this lightly: America isn't facing an authoritarian future. America is living an authoritarian present.

Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner's closest friends have released a joint statement to The Associated Press, paying tribute to the couple.
It is signed by Billy and Janice Crystal, Albert and Kimberly Brooks, Martin Short, Alan and Robin Zweibel, Larry David and Ashley Underwood, Marc Shaiman and Lou Mirabal, Barry and Diana Levinson, and AmbassadorJames Costos and Michael Smith.
"Going to the movies in a dark theater filled with strangers having a common experience, laughing, crying, screaming in fear, or watching an intense drama unfold is still an unforgettable thrill. Tell us a story audiences demand of us. Absorbing all he had learned from his father Carl and his mentor Norman Lear, Rob Reiner not only was a great comic actor, he became a master story teller. There is no other director who has his range. From comedy to drama to 'mockumentary' to documentary he was always at the top of his game. He charmed audiences. They trusted him. They lined up to see his films.
"His comedic touch was beyond compare, his love of getting the music of the dialogue just right, and his sharpening of the edge of a drama was simply elegant. For the actors, he loved them. For the writers he made them better. His greatest gift was freedom. If you had an idea, he listened, he brought you into the process. They always felt they were working as a team. To be in his hands as a film maker was a privilege but that is only part of his legacy.
Rob was also a passionate, brave citizen, who not only cared for this country he loved, he did everything he could to make it better and with his loving wife Michele, he had the perfect partner. Strong and determined, Michele and Rob Reiner devoted a great deal of their lives for the betterment of our fellow citizens... They were a special force together-dynamic, unselfish and inspiring. We were their friends, and we will miss them forever.
"There is a line from one of Rob’s favorite films, 'It's a Wonderful Life,' 'Each man's life touches so many other lives, and when he isn't around, he leaves an awful hole, doesn't he?' You have no idea."

Tech Bro's Sense of Smell: A Short Story in Three Acts
Act I
A woman posts a photo holding her English PhD thesis on the politics of smell (or the relationship between smell and power).
Tech bros left, right, and center troll her, trash her. Thousands of hateful, sexist comments.
This is a complete and utter waste of time and effort and money; literary studies is a fake academic field, they say.
Who even needs yet another PhD in English, they ask.
Act II
A white tech bro sees a photo of a hackathon with a bunch of young Indian men in the foreground.
"imagine the smell," he comments.
Indian tech bros criticize him. This is racist, they say.
We wash ourselves with water after pooping unlike you folks who use dry toilet paper. It's you who smells, they say.
They ask the white tech bro to apologize.
White tech bro says, this is a harmless joke, all hackathons smell. He says, he will not apologize, and asks others to be charitable with him.
Indian tech bros start leaving 1 star reviews for the app the company the white tech bro works at.
Act III
The white tech bros' boss is an Indian tech bro.
The Indian boss fires the white tech bro.
Epilogue
Now do you see how complex the relationship between smell and power is. That's why smart folks at top universities spend years trying to understand and explain this relationship.
Plus, a world-wide network of experience and support means that people feel validated where before they felt shamed. So now there’s not just awareness, but a will to see change made. It’s half the freaking human race, after all!
