Disregarding British vs American, and whole- or part-sentence, as an occasional programmer, to me the initial capital letter and the terminal period are the bounds of the sentence. The rest goes between, so if the sentence ends with a quote, “the period is always at the end”.

My #Eurovisión2026 faves this year: Croatia France Bulgaria Poland Albania Romania - basically all the big choral/opera ones. And I didn’t mind Moldova. Finland nah Sweden nah Malta nah, dull dull. Oh disco granddaddy Italy was OK too
Happy for Bulgaria to win, and showing real quality by essentially improvising this winner’s performance rather than the infinitely-rehearsed staged performance.
