PLATEAU STATE IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS: PLATEAU GOVERNMENT RESTORES HISTORIC HILL STATION HOTEL, JOS, IN SOFT GRAND OPENING
The Plateau State Government has announced the soft grand opening of the historic Hill Station Hotel, Jos, in a ceremony held on 1st October, 2026, to mark Nigeria's 66th Independence Anniversary.

Joyce Lohya Ramnap, mni, who represented His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, Esq., at the event, joined dignitaries, investors and other government officials for the test-opening of the newly remodeled landmark.
Built in 1938 during the colonial era, the Hill Station Hotel served as one of Nigeria's first and most famous hotels, famously hosting Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II alongside global dignitaries and explorers. The iconic facility has now been fully revitalized under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement between the Plateau State Government and Hillside Hospitality.
Delivering the Governor's message, Commissioner Ramnap disclosed that the 1st October event was a soft opening to test operations and service delivery, while the official commissioning and major grand opening will be conducted by His Excellency, Governor Caleb Mutfwang himself in the coming weeks.
She reiterated the administration's unwavering commitment to restoring critical state-owned assets and positioning Plateau as a leading destination for tourism, sports and investment.
According to her, this milestone forms part of the "Time is Now" administration's broader strategy to revive the State's economy by promoting tourism, attracting local and foreign direct investments, creating employment opportunities, and leveraging public-private partnerships for sustainable development.
"This is more than the reopening of a hotel; it is the reopening of Plateau to the world. For a State that has been a flashpoint, we are deliberately rewriting our narrative from conflict to commerce, from history to hospitality. The return of the Hill Station Hotel tells investors that Plateau is peaceful, our government honors agreements, and your investment is safe here," Ramnap stated.
She emphasized that the revitalized facility will further strengthen Plateau State's reputation as one of Nigeria's foremost destinations for hospitality, leisure and business investment, and called on potential investors at home and in the diaspora to take advantage of Plateau's clement weather, rich cultural heritage and investor-friendly policies.

PLATEAU STATE GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES RESUMPTION OF SCHOOLS, STRENGTHENS DIPHTHERIA PREVENTION MEASURES
Following the implementation of precautionary and public health measures to contain the reported cases of suspected Diphtheria infection in some parts of the State, the Plateau State Government has directed the resumption of academic activities in all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state with effect from Monday, September 14, 2026.
The decision is taken in line with the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of pupils, students, teachers and other members of the school community while ensuring continuity in the education sector.
The temporary closure of schools, which took effect on September 7, 2026, was a preventive measure designed to provide health authorities with the opportunity to assess the situation and strengthen surveillance and response mechanisms in affected and potentially affected communities.
Government assures parents, guardians, school proprietors and administrators that appropriate health measures are being put in place to combat the disease and minimise the risk of transmission as schools reopen.
All school authorities are expected to have basic precautionary measures, maintain a clean and hygienic learning environment, while teachers and school management are encouraged to remain vigilant for symptoms or signs suggestive of Diphtheria and promptly alert the appropriate health authorities.
Parents and guardians are equally urged to take personal hygiene seriously, including regular handwashing, maintaining clean surroundings, avoiding unnecessary close contact with persons showing suspicious symptoms, and seeking medical attention promptly whenever a child or any member of the household develops concerning symptoms.
Any suspected or identified case should be taken immediately to the nearest health centre or appropriate health facility for proper assessment and management. Members of the public are advised against self-medication or concealing suspected cases, as early detection and appropriate treatment remain critical to preventing further spread.
Parents, guardians, school proprietors, teachers and students are therefore urged to support the government’s efforts by adhering to all health advisories and ensuring that the resumption of academic activities is accompanied by responsible health practices.

As Plateau State continues to invest in its children, the message remains clear: a stronger education system is the foundation for a stronger Plateau.

MUTFWANG FLAGS OFF EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS, 19 BUSES, DIGITAL DEVICES FOR PLATEAU BASIC SCHOOLS
...says the state is investing N10 billion in basic education
Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, Esq, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to repositioning basic education as the foundation for sustainable development, with the flag-off of the distribution of teaching and learning materials, 19 buses, digital devices and a two-day capacity-building workshop under the HOPE-EDU Programme.
Governor Mutfwang made this declaration on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the headquarters of the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (PSUBEB), Jos, during the ceremony marking the distribution of the educational resources and the rollout of computers and tablets to strengthen basic education delivery across the state.
Describing the intervention as more than a ceremonial exercise, the Governor said it represented a deliberate step in his administration’s policy to ensure that every Plateau child has access to relevant, safe and quality basic education.
He explained that the government’s decision to clear outstanding counterpart funding obligations to the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) had enabled the state to unlock critical interventions for the sector.
Mutfwang disclosed that Plateau State was now among the states in Nigeria up to date with its UBEC counterpart obligations, following the clearance of outstanding payments inherited from 2022 and 2023.
He said the state was also preparing to make its 2026 counterpart contribution, which, alongside other interventions, would translate into an investment of more than N10 billion in basic education.
The Governor said the 19 buses being deployed to the education system would strengthen school supervision, monitoring and the distribution of educational resources, particularly in rural and hard-to-reach communities. He charged Education Secretaries and Local Government Education Authorities to ensure that the vehicles were deployed strictly for their intended purposes, properly maintained and safeguarded as public assets.
Mutfwang also challenged teachers to raise the standard of instruction, particularly in English Language and Mathematics, stressing that strong foundational learning was essential to the academic development of children.
He directed the Commissioner for Education and PSUBEB management to develop a deliberate programme to improve teachers’ capacity in English Language delivery, while urging the Nigeria Union of Teachers and other stakeholders to support efforts to strengthen teaching standards and restore confidence in public schools.
The Governor, who recalled his experience as a beneficiary of public education, said the quality of foundational learning has a direct bearing on a child’s ability to understand other subjects. He declared: “We are not sacking people, but we will push you to the point that you must raise the bar to a basic minimum standard.”
He further disclosed that more than 1,200 classrooms had been renovated across the 17 Local Government Areas in the past three years, stressing that infrastructure must be complemented by quality teaching, teacher welfare, appropriate learning materials and conducive learning environments.
He also announced a renewed campaign to increase enrolment in public schools and called on traditional and religious leaders, parents, communities and civil society organisations to help remove barriers to education.
The Governor directed Education Secretaries to regard their positions as field responsibilities rather than office appointments, charging them to regularly visit schools and ensure that teaching is carried out properly with the right materials and at the appropriate time.
He also announced that future recruitment under the HOPE-EDU Programme would give special consideration to rural postings
Speaking on accountability, Mutfwang insisted that every resource provided under the intervention must translate into measurable improvements in learning outcomes. He called on teachers, parents, traditional leaders, lawmakers, communities and development partners to work with government to build a stronger public education system capable of securing a brighter future for every Plateau child.
In his address, the Executive Chairman of PSUBEB, Sunday Samuel Amuna, disclosed that the intervention included 296,765 core textbooks in Mathematics, English Language, Basic Science and Computer Studies, 19,905 copies of curriculum materials, and 34,590 core textbooks, including computers, procured under the 2025 Basic Education Advancement Programme. He added that the intervention also included 67,200 teachers’ guides, 30,000 Early Grade Reading textbooks, 15 sewing and knitting machines and 1,000 sanitary pads for distribution to schools.
Amuna explained that the materials were designed to strengthen classroom instruction, lesson planning, literacy and numeracy, while the buses would expand the operational reach of education officials. He urged Education Secretaries and LGEA officials to protect the assets and ensure their effective utilisation for the benefit of schools and learners.
Earlier, the Plateau State HOPE Project Coordinator, Mr. Aliyu Baba, said the intervention builds on the recruitment and deployment of 1,500 teachers across the 17 Local Government Areas, as well as improvements in school infrastructure.
He explained that the provision of laptops and tablets to Education Secretaries and EMIS officers, alongside the two-day training on the Trace and Track (TnT) Management System, would strengthen data management, asset tracking, monitoring and accountability in the education sector.
The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Hon. Maren Ishaku Yobo, described the TnT system as an important complement to the ministry’s monitoring and evaluation responsibilities, while the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Gloria Karuri, affirmed the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that the investments translate into measurable improvements in learning outcomes, teacher support and accountability.
The event was attended by government functionaries, traditional leaders, education stakeholders and other partners, who witnessed the flag-off of the educational materials, commissioning of the 19 buses, rollout of computers and tablets, and commencement of the capacity-building workshop.

The directive, issued on behalf of Governor Caleb Mutfwang, is a proactive and preventive measure against the rising Diphtheria outbreak. While Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa LGAs have reported suspected cases, with Jos North and the Rikkos community identified as the epicenter, the closure applies statewide to ensure uniformity in protection. All schools that have already resumed are to close and remain closed until further notice. According to the Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Baamlong, health authorities have confirmed 153 suspected cases, 25 deaths, and 14 cases currently on treatment, all recorded in the last two weeks. “This decision was not made lightly,” Hon. Ramnap stated. “But the life of one Plateau child is worth more than any academic calendar. We must act now to break the chain of transmission and protect our families.”
Diphtheria is a highly contagious bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It spreads through coughing, sneezing, close contact, and sharing utensils or towels, and primarily affects the nose and throat with symptoms that include sore throat, fever, headache, swelling of the throat, difficulty swallowing, and a greyish membrane in the throat.
Health officials confirm that Diphtheria is vaccine-preventable, and children who are unvaccinated or have not completed their three doses face the highest risk of severe illness. This scientific reality is why government had to act swiftly and broadly to safeguard our children and communities.
In addition to the temporary school closure, the Plateau State Government is rolling out immediate safety measures to protect citizens. Parents and guardians are strongly urged to ensure their children are fully and properly vaccinated by visiting the nearest government health facility. Citizens are also advised to maintain strict personal hygiene through regular use of hand sanitizers and frequent handwashing, and to make use of face masks in public transportation and all public places. Furthermore, under the Plateau Express Service and TinCity Metro Buses, passenger capacity has been reduced to ensure safety, and passengers are encouraged to use face masks at all times. “These measures are about love for one another and responsibility to our community,” the Commissioner added. “We appeal to parents to please keep pupils at home, avoid crowded places, and seek immediate medical attention at government health facilities rather than resort to self-medication. The government will communicate the school resumption date in due course.
Hon. Ramnap also used the opportunity to highlight ongoing efforts by the "Time Is Now" administration to deliver progress across security, infrastructure, agriculture, and youth empowerment. She acknowledged the present challenges but reaffirmed government’s commitment to transparency, citizen engagement, and building a Plateau where peace and development thrive. “We are on a road of recovery and renewal. This health challenge is one we will overcome together, just as we are overcoming other challenges facing our dear state.
The Commissioner called on media, community leaders, religious bodies, and citizens to join in sensitization and to share only verified information as we work together to keep Plateau safe.
