Too Big To Fail
Replying to @Suhail
I’ve heard several OAI people say there are unfixable bugs in hardware that are exploitable by AI models directly speaking machine code so even if we could solve software that’s not enough. We need defense to move faster than offense if that’s even possible we may just have a new normal that requires adapting to insecure software (bank transfers require going into a branch and taking a dna test 🤣😬)
Marc Andreessen says the gap between what AI-native startups and incumbents think AI can do is the widest he’s ever seen:
"The AI-native early stage startups have just a completely different view on what they can do with AI than the typical incumbents in almost any industry, almost without exception."
"AI is just racing ahead in capability even week by week... There are going to be a lot of industries that are really up for grabs in a fundamentally more profound way than maybe has been the case in the past."
"The founders are gonna have a level of superpowers coming from the use of these tools and these technologies that they just simply haven't had in the past... Had I had Astra and Netscape in 1994, like, oh my God. Like, Ben, what would you and I have been able to do at Netscape?"
"Those entrepreneurs are gonna color way outside the lines. We already see this. They're not gonna think of themselves as like, 'I'm just a software company,' or, 'I'm just a hardware company,' or even, 'I'm just an AI company.'"

Today, a16z Crypto is becoming a16z Frontier.
Since joining a16z in 2013, @cdixon has focused on technologies that look futuristic well before they reach the mainstream. Those themes led to investments in Oculus, Skydio, Zipline, Coinbase, Solana, and Uniswap.
Frontier expands that mandate beyond crypto to back "outer planet" founders who are building new technologies and creating markets that may take years to develop.
Chris joins @pmarca, @bhorowitz, and @eriktorenberg to discuss why crypto has become part of the broader tech landscape, why Frontier fills a hole in the firm's architecture, and why they'd rather be too early than too late.
They also get into why the gap between AI-native startups and incumbents is the widest Marc has ever seen, how AI could pull forward 20 years of frontier technology, why stablecoins may become the way AI agents pay each other, how AI is breaking the internet's business model, and why today's 18-year-olds are about to become superhumans.

Go behind the scenes of Made by Sound.
A story of music, collaboration and craft with @fredagainagain1 and NEST Acoustics. Discover how sound brought the Apple Music logo to life, captured entirely in camera. Just music, made visible.
After upgrading to macOS 27.0.1, my 2017 LG UltraFine started acting weird! Randomly going black, USB controller no longer being recognized... etc...
Downloaded LG Screen Manager from the App Store (1-star rating lol) and noticed a firmware update was available. But the updater kept crashing.
Apparently, this has been a known issue on Apple Silicon since the M3 and macOS 26, but @LGUS hasn't given a shit about fixing it for two years.
So I gave Codex Astra the IPS crash report. It identified a double-free memory error, downloaded the latest firmware, patched the updater with a 30-line Python script, and code-signed it ("untrusted developer" warning, but who cares).
Ran the patched updater, and my monitor is back to life. All issues gone.
Wild times. All of that took me 15 minutes. What a time to be a dev.
Shame on LG, though.

Doing the napkin math on a sub-one-second 0 to 60 mph run explains the biggest engineering debate swirling around tonight’s demo.
Hitting 60 mph in under a second takes more than 2.75 Gs of acceleration, while the stickiest street-legal tires on dry pavement max out around 1.5 Gs of friction. Past that limit, adding more motor torque just turns rubber into smoke.
That is why everyone is arguing over the teaser image right now. When people flipped the teaser photo 180 degrees upside down, they realized the four plumes match up with US Patent 12,746,987 B1, granted to Tesla on September 29 for a skirtless four-fan rear diffuser that vacuums the car to the road. Whether tonight shows off SpaceX cold-gas thrusters, quad electric suction fans, or both, Tesla had to rewrite aerodynamics just to get past the friction limit of rubber.

“Hire the sons of your own soil”
You saved six percent on your framing crew by hiring imported, off-the-books labor instead of the local young men in your county.
Congratulations on your gross margin.
In exchange, you ensured that the twenty-two-year-old boys sitting in the pews behind you can’t earn an honest wage, can’t afford to buy a modest starter home, and can’t afford to marry.
You literally sold out the next generation of American families so you could pocket a marginally larger distribution.
Hire the sons of your own soil. Pay them a living wage.
