Ignore the misinformation. We need to fix a small number of specific flaws that the previous government knowingly left in its Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 to ensure that the enfranchisement measures in that piece of legislation can operate as intended. We have made clear we intend to make those fixes through our forthcoming Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill. Once we have done so and can implement the new valuation process, it will be cheaper and easier for leaseholders to extend their lease or buy their freehold.

Good news: The latest ONS crime stats show that theft from the person (e.g. phone theft) was driven down by 24% over the last year.. Robbery of personal property was driven down 12%. Our hard work and record funding from City Hall is paying off.

This Labour government’s transformative Renters’ Rights Act empowers private renters to challenge unreasonable rent increases. If a tenant believes a proposed rent increase is above the open-market rent, they can refer the matter to the First-tier Tribunal. In a recent case in Manchester where the Landlord proposed an increase in rent from Ā£1,650 per calendar month to Ā£1,700, the Tribunal determined the open market rent was actually Ā£1,450 per calendar month. We’re standing up for renters and our reforms are working. gov.uk/residential-property-…

Today the Tories pushed a vote to leave the ECHR. A vote to destabilise our relations with the EU and undermine the Good Friday Agreement. A vote to join Russia and Belarus as the only European countries outside. A vote to turn their backs on a charter championed by Churchill.

I'm determined to build a safer London for everyone. In Westminster, overall crime has fallen by 17% over the last year, including major reductions in theft and robbery after we provided record funding for the police from City Hall. But we won’t let up. We'll keep working with the Met and local partners to drive crime down.

Three years on from the October 7 attacks on Israel, we remember those who were senselessly killed by Hamas terrorists. The impact of the attacks has been felt not just in Israel, but in Jewish communities across the world who still bear the burden of the tragic events that day. In the years since, we have seen a disturbing rise in antisemitic behaviour in the UK. A year ago we witnessed a horrifying terrorist attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Manchester, with further attacks against Jewish people and institutions since. I want Britain’s Jewish community to hear this from me directly. We stand with you. Abuse and violence against you, in any form, will not be tolerated. Not on our streets, not online, not in our schools or universities. That’s why we are funding protection for synagogues, schools and community buildings, and why we will come down hard on antisemitism wherever it is found - in classrooms, on campuses and in neighbourhoods. At home, we are committed to protecting our citizens from vile hatred. Abroad, we continue to work towards a two-state solution, with Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in peace and security. An attack on Jewish people in Britain is an attack on all of us. Antisemitism has no place in this country, and we will do everything we can to stamp it out.

We now know the Tories will put the interests of unscrupulous landlords over those of private renters. Speaking at the Conservative Party conference, the Shadow Housing Secretary told an audience that our transformative Renters’ Rights Act ā€œhas to goā€. Only Labour will guarantee the security, rights and protections the Act has given private renters.
From PA, at 5:26pm. Katie Lam has suggested she would scrap the Labour Government’s Renters’ Rights Act. The shadow housing secretary told a fringe event at the Tory Party conference that the legislation ā€œhas to goā€. From PA, at 6:13pm: A Conservative source said she had been speaking in the broader context of the restrictions and challenges faced by landlords, and this was not a policy announcement.

Today is an important milestone in the long fight for justice for the bereaved, survivors, residents and local Grenfell community. I want to thank the investigators who have painstakingly examined thousands of pieces of evidence and statements and submitted case files to the Crown Prosecution Service. Londoners, particularly all those devastated by this tragedy, deserve full accountability for those responsible. I’ll continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Grenfell community in their fight for justice and change, do everything in my power to ensure all Londoners are safe in their homes and work with the Government to improve building standards šŸ’š
Today, the Met has submitted all files to the Crown Prosecution Service for charging decisions relating to the Grenfell Tower fire. This marks a significant milestone in the investigation into the tragedy that claimed 72 lives, and we have updated the bereaved, survivors and residents.

A new National Care Service. Greater public control of water, energy, and housing. A National Commission on Electoral Reform. Strengthening our relationship with Europe. Reforming the education and welfare system. Today I set out a different path for Britain. You may disagree with some or all of what I have said today. But I have given you what you often say is missing from politics. Honesty, ideas and a clear direction for the country we all love. If you agree with enough of what I have said, get behind this plan. And get behind each other. It's time to draw a line. To move beyond a decade of drift and division. To bring a spirit of unity and positivity back to our country. To unlock the working-class aspiration that is still there in every postcode. To hope again.

We’re starting to turn the tide on homebuilding, despite the toughest conditions for decades. šŸ  New-build starts rose 298% to 16,290 from April to June 2026 šŸ  Completions increased 9% to 18,050 homes Still a long way to go, but we’re making progress.
These are tough times for housebuilding in England, but new housing statistics released this morning show welcome signs of progress: āœ…Housing starts in Q2 of this year were up 6% on the previous quarter (a 20% increase on the same quarter last year). āœ…London saw the biggest increase with starts up a phenomenal 298% on last year. āœ…Units within outline residential applications are up 41% from a year earlier. āœ…Permission in principle decisions on brownfield register sites more than doubled (a 79% increase on the same quarter last year). Over the past 26 months, we’ve undertaken the most rapid, holistic and radical overhaul of the housing and planning system in decades. Despite the strong headwinds, we are going to stay the course and ensure the country enjoys high and sustainable rates of housebuilding in the years ahead.

In my kitchen there is a jar of honey gifted to me by Phil Rosenberg, the President of the Board of Deputies, who insisted I take it home for my family, along with a bag of apples, because it would not be a proper new year otherwise. So let me begin the simple way: Shana tova u'metuka. A good and sweet new year to every Jewish family in Britain. The custom of dipping an apple in honey is one of the most hopeful things I know. It is not a claim that the year gone by was sweet. It is a decision that the year ahead should be. And I know that the year behind us has been anything but. Two Jewish men, Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby both of blessed memory, were murdered at the gates of Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in an antisemitic terror attack on Yom Kippur, defending their synagogue and those praying inside it. As Mayor of Greater Manchester, I felt first-hand the anxiety that attack caused across the Jewish community. The sorrow and fear of that day have not disappeared. As Yom Kippur approaches once again, I know many people will remember them and reflect on what that attack meant. So, this message has to be more than a greeting for the chaggim. It has to contain a commitment. Jewish people must be able to live, worship, go to school, attend synagogue and participate fully in British life without fear. That is why we are investing more than £250 million to increase policing, improve community safety and tackle rising antisemitism, bringing total government investment in Jewish security to almost £310 million. In recent days, the Housing Secretary and I have heard directly from Jewish community leaders about the challenges they face and the anxiety many families are experiencing as the High Holy Days approach. That is why we have established a Cabinet committee on antisemitism, bringing departments together to ensure our response is coordinated, comprehensive and sustained. But security is only one part of the response. We have to tackle antisemitism at its source. We are also investing £7 million to tackle antisemitism in schools, colleges and universities, including support for Jewish students, staff training and action to address misinformation and promote respectful discussion. And we are expanding the Common Ground programme to support communities facing the greatest risk of antisemitism and help local leaders respond when tensions rise. British Jews have helped build the schools, charities, businesses and institutions that make our country stronger. From the NHS and education to the arts, innovation and entrepreneurship, their contribution has enriched every part of our national life. The contribution the Jewish community makes to British life is remarkable- and we should celebrate it. This new year, my commitment is simple: to work every day to ensure that Jewish people are safe, valued and able to live their lives free from fear. May the year ahead be sweet, and may it be safe. Shana tova.

Our yearlong investigation reveals Nigel Farage courting illicit funding as part of a plot to bring foreign money into British politics, orchestrated by his top aides and caught on hidden camera.
