JPEG XL turned on by default has just started shipping in Chrome 155 - after ~30 years officially replacing JPEG for the next decades, ~2x reducing web sizes, adding HDR, transparency, progressive decoding for much faster www, also animations, lossless - should retire also ancient GIF, PNG, TIFF - finally reaching universality and much better compression.

JPEG XL is getting closer to real browser adoption.
Safari already supports it. Chrome and Firefox are moving in that direction.
@jonsneyers explains why that matters for image performance.

JPEG XL is quietly the best image format the web should be using, and almost nobody talks about it.

Question for @nothingsupport: why do HDR images not work at all in Chrome?
On my previous phone (Motorola Edge 40) it worked perfectly, but on my new Nothing Phone 3a it is very broken.
In YouTube, HDR video works fine so this must be some kind of software issue...

Breaking news: imgproxy now supports JPEG XL! We added this much-anticipated feature to theย `latest`ย build of our Docker images. We usually don't announce features not in release yet, but we think this one deserves special treatment ๐ญ.

THREAD: Itโs now pretty clear what happened in Amsterdam this week. But first some background.
Imagine Vatican City bombs Naples and Milan on a daily basis, with bombs from Brazil. They send priests to Berlin for a basketball game, who chant "death to Italians, the Holy See will win!".
The next day, the headlines are about the worrying rise in violence against Catholics.
Interesting results for lossless compression of volumetric medical images (MRI and CT). Basically JPEG XL comfortably beats any other non-AI codec, and remains pretty competitive even when including experimental new AI methods.

It is remarkable how clear an example the USA is of first-past-the-post voting leading to a two-party duopoly where the Left creeps towards the Right since evil-minus-epsilon is still a lesser evil, while the Right tries to distinguish itself by producing ever bigger lunatics.
