I feel like an old unc having lived this. @sama was early to SoMoLo (Social Mobile Local) and every major titan would make a move to copy and try to replicate Loopt.
Ultimately the entire market was wrong. A breakout in local never really happened in the way folks thought.

The app was a location-sharing app but nobody thinks about it when they think of Sam

The company they’re working on may not be the one they become known for
It might just be the company that teaches them how to sell, hire, raise money, and keep going long enough to find "it"
But at the time, it looks like a kid trying to explain a weird location app to a stranger over lunch

But if they succeed, it'll be pretty funny to see all haters be wrong. If they fail, it'll also be pretty funny to see all these kingmaking VCs eat humble pie.

I don't think folks realize that we've had "auditors" for these AI systems for decades.
Google, Amazon and Meta have Safety and Privacy teams on their Ranking groups as well as special interest groups (understanding blowback from e.g. Political factions) that would discuss and govern things like whether the LGBT community would get mad at using gender as a ranking signal in ads (real situation). Or whether the ads showed up next to political or pornographic content too many times for the advertiser to feel comfortable. All these systems are probabilistic so every decision was a tug between the product team optimizing their metric and the safety teams optimizing theirs. And usually one comes at the expense of the other.
I'm not particularly sure that's going to be the move forward answer. The experiment has been run before.
It’s sad watching boomer startup legends drift out of the game and spend 300+ weeks outside the bay. When they drop content, 90% of their advice is still brilliant.
But then you see the other 10% that's actively harmful bc it only applies to an ecosystem from 20 years ago.

A very common sentiment I'm hearing among math students: "I don't want to become a mathematician anymore." I've seen this before, I think the generation of digital artists who came of age around 2022 will be the last.
AI might not functionally replace mathematicians or artists, but it might well cause their near-extinction anyway, by crushing the spirits of the younger generations.

Katherine does a fantastic job putting to words the feeling of today, where I'm ironically posting from a plane wearing my "Save the Shire" shirt Palantir gave me on my first day.
You look back and for the first time, it feels like a different world. And it actually feels like a part of history vs lived reality.
This might be the first major anniversary of 9/11 where watching the footage really feels like an older world. It was a different world. And those of us who came of age in it have an obligation to never forget what happened that day and after.
To those with no memory of 9/11, I recommend visiting the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. There were so many witnesses to this horrific crime and so many details we never discuss. Too many victims had to make the unthinkable choice about their last moments.
The last time I visited, I stopped on this testimony from a man who witnessed the moment a woman jumped to her death:
"She had a business suit on, her hair all askew. This woman stood there for what seemed like minutes and then she held down her skirt and jumped off the ledge. I thought, how human, how modest, to hold down her skirt before she jumped. I couldn't look anymore."
The other thing you see at the Memorial is just how many heroes were minted that day. How many men ran into the towers knowing they were running towards their deaths. So many people died in service of their fellow Americans that day, and their courage inspired the many men and women of my generation who decided to enlist and serve the country after watching the towers fall.
The legacy of 9/11 is the heroism of our fellow Americans. The courage of so many to lay down their lives for their neighbors. May they rest in peace and may we never forget.
Right about now I'm like "thank god Ali was kind enough to let me be an LP in Neo years ago."

@Muse is delightful and is able to handle tasks other agents failed at. I also already have access to other accounts through FB Connect.
And surprisingly, I trust @Meta more than a startup here with my data. Incentives are aligned since data misuse will end in lawsuits that hit market cap and Meta has enough experience here to not cross lines.
I was also at Meta doing ML and know exactly how seriously they take security and privacy.
