This week’s ChatGPT feature drop - Aug 21: Another Friday, another roundup of what we shipped this week: 1/ Recent photos: Long press on + menu to quickly attach recents on iOS - this is a fun, power user feature. just beautiful design! also a handy shortcut. 2/ Time: We made it so ChatGPT better understands your current time. It was surprisingly bad at this before, for some interesting, complex reasons. Now it's better! 3/ Long convo loading: Long conversations load and run faster on chatgpt.com. Less waiting = better. 4/ 'No internet' errors: We show clearer updates in the UI when you’re waiting for an internet connection. It's so frustrating when ChatGPT times out. Now at least you'll know why, when it's the internet. thanks to the crew that keeps shipping every week and hope you all enjoy 🚀

I wrote a personal review of 2025. Lots of travel. Unexpectedly went very local. A reminder that people > algorithms. If you’re into annual reviews, it’s here 👇 drop.jonbstrong.com/p/the-jb…

Just roasted myself on ChatGPT. I asked: “If I had to give myself humorous titles, what would they be?” Reply with the one you think is most accurate... or tell me what ChatGPT gives you :)

Love how TJ asks the most thought provoking questions in the local newsletter space around here!
what are everyone's thoughts on the idea of a state-wide "local" newsletter? this is something i'd generally written off as being way too wide of a net and difficult to create content that people all over a state would care about but starting to think there may be a play here obvious upsides: -much higher TAM -lower cost of acquisition since have a much larger target audience -easier path to get in front of big advertisers who want a broader reach than just a hyper local one @NateSpangle is doing this in Indiana very successfully feels especially possible in say the smaller half of the US states still concerned about how to create the right content, but probably very doable is anyone else doing this, especially successfully?

Getting tons of “pick your brain?” Zoom requests lately. Some are great, many aren’t, and I still feel guilty saying no 😔 How do other people deal with this?

1. EpicenterNYC Excellent logo, spacing between sections, and font choice. Newsletter sign up button sticks out on the sticky header, and the site has well integrated ad spots.

Let’s talk about AI slop. Slop has been slapped onto “poor” AI output, but it’s actually not unique to LLMs. Human beings have been putting out slop forever, we’ve just called it different things: “cliche,” “cheesy,” “dumb,” etc. Slop, at its core, is a low-hanging fruit idea. Something that lacks novelty and intellectual precision. Something that many have said before and because of that instead of tickling an intellectual itch, it’s more of a scratch to the brain of the recipient. And what makes an idea low hanging? It’s a human or AI output that is the highest probability pick of an idea. And because it’s the highest probability, it’s the most expected. And because it’s the most expected it’s the least original. Hence the scratch vs the tickle.
Has anyone encountered a good definition of “slop”. In a quantitative, measurable sense. My brain has an intuitive “slop index” I can ~reliably estimate, but I’m not sure how to define it. I have some bad ideas that involve the use of LLM miniseries and thinking token budgets.

Austin might be the second greatest city in America. Behind New York City, of course.
