Enjoying the spelling bee/hard work discourse lately, and people turning to sports for examples. We love winners, we love talent, we love hard work, we love to make fun of people who put in work on odd things… but if a person loves their odd thing, we can appreciate it too.

“Natural talents” look like that because they’ve put in the reps. Goes for athletes and communicators and others.

A good question. One answer: partly due to carve outs and exemptions
I expected the Trump tariffs to be a disaster. I'm puzzled by what I'm not seeing. They don't seem to have harmed the US economy in any way I can notice with my eyeballs or in the statistics. Business activity is booming, unemployment seems to be low, household consumption is up, stock market seems to be doing fine. Is my whole model of trade and economics broken? How is he getting away with this?

.@ScottJenningsKY just made this argument on @wethefifth, and they didn’t make the best argument against it either. A better metric would be employees plus contractors, and/or total spending on all of them.

What's a better metric for "how libertarian" a President is than "percent of the federal workforce eliminated?" The federal workforce shrunk by roughly 348,000 workers in 2025, according to federal data. That's almost 12%. A cut unprecedented since the WW2 demobilization.

Lawyer guilds! Consider lawyer use of LLMs to draft contracts. Paternalists will (with some justification) worry about non-professionals doing the same thing; clients don’t know why that term exists or why it’s phrased just-so, so mistakes are inevitable. But lawyers are…

Unauthorized possession of knowledge is suspicious to many people who are in the business of creating, safeguarding, and promulgating knowledge, and unauthorized _production_ of knowledge sounds like a category error. Of course the computer cannot do that. Anyone who claims…

probably comparing the client’s use of LLMs to hiring the lawyer as the alternative. In reality, the client might just not do or not paper the deal if they need to pay for the lawyer, so the LLM can be a positive.

We've always had religious sects that believe in, and plan for, the apocalypse. There's no reason why this era would be any different.

What a great tweet The depth of thinking they demonstrate when talking about something. You ask what you think is a simple question and the response raises complexities you didn’t even consider They make distinctions that actually matter, and not to be pedantic Clear writing
in your experience, how can you tell when someone is really smart?

“I stopped being a Communist five minutes ago. Let’s go win this election.”
New — Will Lawrence, who won a critical Dem primary in a swing House district in Michigan after divisive three-way fight, on whether he can bring Dems together and appeal to swing voters with his progressive views. Says he’s not a DSA member. So when did he leave DSA? “In the last month I let my membership lapse.” So how does he differ from the socialists:

I was once like this, seeing no differences between Rs and Ds meaningful enough to matter. Then I saw candidates where there were such differences; even if the opponent was bad, one was worse! This is a post about why I expect to vote for Mike Rogers.
I love all these “right-wingers” who are like “the Republican Party hasn’t done anything to earn my vote.” Yes they have. THEY AREN’T COMMUNISTS! We all know they’re dysfunctional. Hell, my toddler knows. In fact I’d go so far as to say they’re the worst political party in existence, except for all the others. But as it stands they are the only thing preventing America from becoming Great Britain. So if you don’t like them fix them. Don’t just sit idly by while Bolsheviks pillage the two-and-a-half centuries of hard work by your ancestors. That’s borderline traitorous. You should know by now that life ain’t fair, and you don’t always get your way. And that everything Communism touches is gone forever.

I’m glad someone else is pointing at comparative advantage as an obvious answer to the AI doomers’ concern. Even people who understand it don’t want to apply it there! 🫡

Reminder that the Founding Fathers also drank excessively. Today you can do that too.

Team I Still Believe has at least two of us
No its still good. Look good things rarely live up to idealistic vision but this is still the Best Thing. The bad ideas of today are not that bad by any historical standards and this process still, even now, is what sharpens the arguments that weaken them. You fear rumor and misinformation? My god the dumb things people believed recently, this all is nothing. You fear wrong but high fitness ideas? Well me too but they've never been scared of back rooms and small crowds. The worst but most contagious ideas were always more contagious in the small society, the group, than the public. No this doesn't have the sheen of the university, the glamor of spitballing it at 2am over that last drink, it's down in the mud and the muck but this here, today, the fights we have, the dumb things we say are still the best truth discovery we have ever had. It doesn't get better than this. I still believe.
