An insurer can sell you a health policy and permanently refuse to pay for your diabetes. That is the harshest of three outcomes you can face if the diagnosis is already on record when you buy. The mildest is a waiting period of up to 3 years under the current IRDAI rules, during which anything related to diabetes comes out of your own pocket. In the middle sits a loading on your premium, which often runs from 10% to 40% of the base premium depending on how well controlled the diabetes is and whether you also have something like hypertension. The last is where the insurer approves the policy but permanently excludes diabetes and its complications, so kidney, nerve, eye and heart problems linked to it are never paid for. Of the three, the waiting period is the only one with an end date, which makes it the one worth working on. Some plans let you add a rider that cuts the wait to 31 days or even day 1, but a few of those riders have to be renewed and paid for every year to keep the benefit, while others can be dropped once the 3 years are served, and that difference changes what you pay over the long run. None of this is a reason to hide the diagnosis. A disclosed condition is covered once the waiting period ends, while a hidden one loses that protection and can lead the insurer to reject the claim or cancel the policy. The cleanest way to avoid all three is to buy before the diagnosis, because a condition that shows up after you are insured is treated like any other new illness. If you are already diagnosed, ask the insurer before you pay whether diabetes will be covered after a waiting period, covered through a rider, accepted with loading or permanently excluded. Heart disease kills close to 20 million people a year. Your policy may already cover the check-up that catches it early. In India it accounts for nearly 1 in 3 deaths. A lot of these cases show up on a report long before they show up as chest pain. Cholesterol creeps up and blood sugar drifts. Blood pressure stays a little high. None of it hurts, so nobody does anything about it. What surprises me is that most health insurers already cover a preventive health check-up, usually once a year or after a few claim-free years. It sits inside the policy document and a lot of us never read that far. Use it to run the basic tests, so any abnormality gets flagged while it’s still just a number on a report. The tests covered and the limit on the benefit differ from insurer to insurer, so check what yours includes. If you don’t know what’s in your health insurance, or you want help finding the right policy with the right add-ons, book a free call with Ditto Insurance. The link is in the comments.

The 5-minute prep that could save your family in a crisis! Recently, someone called us from an ambulance. Their father was having chest pain. They were rushing to the hospital. And mid-panic, they asked: "Which hospital should we go to for a cashless claim?" Your loved one is in an ambulance, and you're panicking. In an emergency, you should ideally go to the nearest hospital first. Get them stable and then transfer them to a cashless network hospital later. But here's how you can be prepared. Which is why at Ditto, we follow the Rule of 5. It means keeping a list of the 5 nearest cashless multispecialty hospitals covered by your policy. Write them down, stick the list on your fridge, and save it in your Notes app. But why 5? Because, the closest hospital might not have beds. The second might not have the right specialist. The third might be full. In an emergency, you need backup options. That’s the baseline. If you want to be even better prepared, keep separate lists for different family members: 5 hospitals for kids (with pediatric care) 5 for elderly parents (with geriatric specialists) 5 general multispecialty hospitals Because a hospital ready for cardiac emergencies may not be equipped for a child’s crisis. How to find your network hospitals: Open your insurer’s app → Search “network hospitals near me” → Filter by multispecialty → Pick the 5 closest. It takes 5 minutes. Insurance companies may have hundreds of network hospitals. But that number is useless if you don’t know which 5 actually matter to you. Share this with someone you care about, and if you need help finding the right insurance, book a free call with Ditto. The link is under the profile! #hospital #emergency #insurance

70–90% of Indians have low vitamin D levels, according to ICMR, as reported by The Times of India. Vitamin D isn’t just for your bones. A deficiency can affect your muscles, calcium absorption, and immune function, and it's also linked to several other health concerns. The tricky part is that vitamin D deficiency can go unnoticed. You may not have any obvious symptoms, even when your levels are low. So if you spend most of your day indoors, get very little sunlight, or haven’t checked your vitamin D levels in a while, it might be worth getting tested.

Heart disease kills 28.6 lakh Indians every year. And you might see signs of the risk in your health reports years before you actually develop it. The risk factors that can eventually lead to a heart attack can often be identified and managed years before the event actually happens. That’s why regular health checks can be useful, especially if you have a family history of heart disease. Here’s a list of health checks you should know about if you want to stay on top of your heart health. Save this for your next health check-up.

5 Questions Everyone Asks Before Buying Term Insurance Does ₹2 crore cover cost twice as much as ₹1 crore? No. Premiums don’t increase proportionately with the cover. So, doubling your cover doesn’t necessarily mean doubling your premium. How much cover can I actually get? Your eligible cover depends on factors like age, income, education, occupation, and financial profile. For some self-employed applicants, insurers may also consider alternative financial indicators. Can I increase my term insurance cover later? Yes, depending on your insurer and plan. Some policies offer life-stage benefits to increase your cover after milestones like marriage, childbirth or taking a home loan. Does age affect term insurance? Yes. Buying younger can mean lower premiums and potentially higher eligibility. As you age, premiums may increase, and underwriting can become more stringent. Is ₹1 crore term insurance enough? It depends. Your cover should be based on your family’s expenses, liabilities, future goals, inflation, and existing life cover, not a round number. Still have questions about term insurance? From choosing your cover to understanding your policy, getting the right answers matters. Book a free call with Ditto’s advisors to get your questions answered.

Indians paid 72% of their medical bills out of pocket in 2000. In 2024, that number is 44%. While we have made considerable progress, unfortunately nearly half of every hospital bill is still coming directly from people's savings. And there are primarily two mistakes we mostly see play out at Ditto, on both ends. The first: "I have savings, I don't need health insurance." One serious hospitalisation can quietly wipe out years of careful saving. In fact, between 3% and 7% of Indian households fall into poverty every year because of medical costs. The second is the opposite. "I have health insurance, I don't need a medical emergency fund." Not every claim gets cashlessly approved or goes through without a deduction. There are certain clauses like consumables, waiting periods, and pre-existing conditions, which may lead to money still coming out of your pocket even with a policy in place. So the right answer is usually a combination of both, a solid health insurance policy and a medical emergency fund working together. One protects you from the bill, the other covers what the policy won't. If you want to know what your current policy actually covers and where the gaps are, book a free call with Ditto.
