But making a public disavowal the price of working with Green councillors raises a bigger question about priorities: why is Labour drawing such a hard line over a party motion while defending policies that have led to pensioners being arrested for protest and Sally Rooney’s books being withdrawn from UK sale? Local cooperation does not require either party to endorse every policy of the other. It requires councillors to work together where they can, protect the people they represent and be honest about where they disagree. Labour should be able to challenge the motion and demand safeguards against antisemitism while also facing scrutiny over civil liberties and its policy on Gaza. If cooperation is possible only after one side performs a public act of repudiation, that looks more like a political test than a serious attempt to address either set of concerns.
