Gospel of the Day ( Luke 12,39-48) Jesus said to his disciples: “Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour when the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." Then Peter said, "Lord, is this parable meant for us or for everyone?" And the Lord replied, "Who, then, is the faithful and prudent steward whom the master will put in charge of his servants to distribute (the) food allowance at the proper time? Blessed is that servant whom his master on arrival finds doing so. Truly, I say to you, he will put him in charge of all his property. But if that servant says to himself, 'My master is delayed in coming,' and begins to beat the menservants and the maidservants, to eat and drink and get drunk, then that servant's master will come on an unexpected day and at an unknown hour and will punish him severely and assign him a place with the unfaithful. That servant who knew his master's will but did not make preparations nor act in accord with his will shall be beaten severely; and the servant who was ignorant of his master's will but acted in a way deserving of a severe beating shall be beaten only lightly. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” vaticannews.va/en/word-of-th…

This woman's comments are a disgrace!
Sister Mary Barron, the latest woman to be named a superior of a Vatican office, spoke about the Church’s missionary spirit, women’s role in Church leadership, and the possibility of women being ordained as priests. ewtnnews.com/vatican/new-vat…

Gospel of the Day (Luke 12,35-38) Jesus said to his disciples: “Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival. Amen, I say to you, he will gird himself, have them recline at table, and proceed to wait on them. And should he come in the second or third watch and find them prepared in this way, blessed are those servants." vaticannews.va/en/word-of-th…

WORDS WITH A HISTORY. WOMEN WITH A FUTURE. Woman comes from the Old English wīfmann: a female person. It has named adult human females in our language for more than a thousand years. Girl has named a female child since the later Middle Ages: a word for a distinct and important stage of life. Mother is far older still. Its ancient linguistic family stretches across centuries and languages: mōdor, mater, mētēr, matar. Different voices, recognising the same profound human relationship. Pregnant reaches back through Latin to birth and new life. These are not cold administrative labels. They are words of identity, childhood, relationship, continuity and human history. Woman. Girl. Mother. Pregnant woman. It is okay to say them. It is important to keep saying them, and public bodies should name us clearly when our bodies, health, rights, risks and needs are being discussed. We now have 9,303 signatures... just 697 more to reach 10,000 and require a Government response. Please help us get there.
Women and girls must remain visible in public language. A new parliamentary petition asks Government departments, the NHS, education and publicly funded bodies to use the words women, girls, mothers and pregnant women as the primary and default wording in policies, guidance and public messages. These words must not be replaced, removed, diluted or overshadowed by alternative terminology. Clear, sex-specific language matters in healthcare, safeguarding, education, data collection and public policy.

I respect the Catholic Church for having zero interest in women priests. No question about it, no movement for it among the cardinals. Popes laugh if they’re asked about it. A whole org just profoundly unmoved by this pervasive modern sensibility. Eternal institution energy.

19 Oct 1914, 1st Battle of Ypres began. First of three costly #WW1 battles centred on town. Attempted flank attacks by both Allies & Germans failed to achieve significant breakthroughs. Both sides settled into trench warfare that would characterize rest of war on Western Front.

A thread for St Frideswide, patron of Oxford, who is celebrated today.
Today is the feast of St Frideswide, the Anglo-Saxon nun who is the patron saint of Oxford. She led a religious community in the early 8th century on the site of what is now Christ Church Cathedral, where this medieval window of her survives.

Gospel of the Day (Luke 12,13-21) Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me." He replied to him, "Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?" Then he said to the crowd, "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions." Then he told them a parable. "There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, 'What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?' And he said, 'This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, "Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!" But God said to him, 'You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?' Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God." vaticannews.va/en/word-of-th…

If there's sunny weather where you are today, make the most of it: it's 'St Luke's little summer'.
If it's warm and sunny today, that's an example of 'St Luke's little summer' - a traditional name for a period of fine weather around the feast of St Luke, 18 October. The sunlight of summer, falling on the glowing colours of autumn. gutenberg.ca/ebooks/sackvill…

SAVE SHAFTESBURY’S HISTORIC CATHOLIC CHURCH The Church of the Holy Name and St Edward the Martyr in Shaftesbury in Dorset, England, is of considerable historical importance. Rooted in the sacred history of a town once home to one of England’s great pre-Norman abbeys, it has long served a resilient Catholic community. Today, the church needs essential repairs, and parishioners are raising funds to preserve this important place of worship for future generations.
