The @DetroitCityFC season starts this week, so it’s time for my annual preemptive apology to anyone who follows me on Twitter for economic development policy or other substantive stuff and instead gets a dose of American minor-league soccer supporter culture. #DCTID
I support US aid to Ukraine for a number of reasons. One of them is that I am against war, and think that Russia failing to achieve its aims thanks to a voluntary alliance of free(ish) countries will discourage future wars of choice by Russia or other dictatorships. See: Taiwan.
The constant griping about Ukraine and Zelenskyy has become very annoying. They are defending their country from invasion. That doesn't mean we have to give them everything they want or value their security more than the U.S. economy, but the blame for all of this lies solely with Vladimir Putin and I'm sick of pretending otherwise.
I also have some sympathy for the Russian people (народ), who deserve as much as anyone else a government that values and protects their rights, “deriving its just power from the consent of the governed.” Putin’s failure in Ukraine creates a potential environment for change.

"Who's gonna stop him?"
In a republic, the answer is Congress, the courts, and the Constitution.
A system where the answer is "nobody" is called a dictatorship.
That's the world JD Vance is describing.

Happened across this bottle of port in the local gas station and bought it out of morbid curiosity as to what the “best grapes from New York” had to offer.
Answer: Not much.
Son (who likes good port) offered the best tasting profile: “It’s like grape juice that hates me.”

Or maybe they should just stop giving subsidies to all projects, stop picking winners, and avoid problems in the future.
New York Power Authority gives data centers discounted electricity without disclosing how much they're saving. Our Alex Camarda calls for transparency: “[NYPA] should undoubtedly disclose how much the state is subsidizing companies in total and individually for low-cost power.” bit.ly/4e7iHxy

Thanks Liz, but I’m more worried about the political duopoly producing senators who think their constituents are dumb enough to be outraged by the Spicy Mayo Trust.

Frank's RedHot
What do these products have in common? One company could soon control them all.
I have concerns that McCormick and Unilever's $45 billion merger could increase YOUR grocery prices.

Thankfully a couple of smart co-authors recently laid out a new way to look at economic development incentives and corporate social responsibility: cei.org/studies/corporate-so…
If sales tick up over the next few decades at an Olathe, KS Tractor Supply Co. store 25 miles away from the new Chiefs stadium, then the increased sales tax revenues will go to pay off stadium debt rather than fund public services.
So much for "stadiums pay for themselves."
The revised STAR district map shows basically the same 293 square miles where any increased sales tax revenues — whether thanks to the Chiefs' presence or other unrelated development or just inflation — will get siphoned off to pay for stadium costs. fieldofschemes.com/2026/10/1…
One of the biggest issues with out-of-control zoning and land use regimes like Detroit’s is that they provide politicians with plenty of levers to pull to harass people and businesses they don’t like.

It has so much support that elected officials refused to let KC citizens vote on it.
Downtown landmarks were lit up blue overnight in support of the Royals Crown Center stadium plan. KC City Council members passed a plan this week to help fund the stadium. The Royals plan to open the new ballpark for the 2030 season. @kmbc
I'm rooting for @smod4real to throw out the first pitch

Arkansas’ proposed economic development amendment would give unelected boards broad powers over taxes and taxpayer dollars. @johnmoz explains why expanding corporate subsidies would put Arkansas taxpayers at risk.

Cities and states cannot subsidize their way to prosperity, writes @johnmoz.

A proposed economic development constitutional amendment in Arkansas has a number of fundamental flaws that create very serious risks for taxpayers and communities. My analysis for @ReasonFdn:
