On 1 September 1914, this gun helped stop a German cavalry division from breaking into the retreating British Army at Néry. I am in awe that it kept firing for two and a half hours after every other gun in its battery was knocked out.
At the end, only Captain Edward Bradbury, Battery Sergeant Major George Dorrell and Sergeant David Nelson were left serving it. Nelson stayed after he was badly wounded and ordered into cover. Bradbury was mortally hit bringing ammunition.
I feel fierce pride looking at its shell-broken muzzle (and heartbreak at what it cost). Their stand bought time until help came. All three received the Victoria Cross.
The gun survives at IWM London. Their names should be just as hard to lose.
