Trump administration officials who've grown increasingly frustrated w/ the largest US power grid's failure to secure enough electricity to guarantee reliability & keep a lid on consumer costs are pushing changes for PJM:

Hours after the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission moved to expunge electric-system bottlenecks that have threatened the AI boom, Chairman Laura Swett said the actions reflect a new interventionist approach bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
What PJM looks like a year from now will depend on the choices the organization — and its regulators — make in the next two months, according to the White House official speaking on condition of anonymity.

A key concern is skyrocketing power prices.
In the first 3 months of this year, wholesale power prices on the PJM grid jumped 76% compared to the same period last year. Capacity costs, which ensure the grid has enough supply during periods of highest demand, rose by 400%. 6/7
In an explosive speech last month, FERC chairman Laura Swett said that maybe PJM had grown "too big to function."
Its success is integral to the US's global AI ambitions, she said, but it's falling short. 5/7
One of the largest electric utilities in its territory — American Electric Power Co. — has threatened to leave, saying that data centers aren't being connected with generation fast enough.
Things could all come to a head at FERC's July 23 meeting. 4/7

Even PJM’s chief executive officer has called the current situation “not tenable,” saying his organization can’t ensure ample future electricity supplies while shielding residential consumers from rising bills.

Federal officials have suggested breaking up PJM Interconnection LLC, which runs the grid from the Illinois prairie to the Jersey Shore.
Why? New data centers are straining power supplies across the 13 states PJM serves, pushing up prices and fueling a political backlash. 2/7
⚡ The AI data center boom in the US is threatening to claim its biggest victim yet — the nation’s largest electric grid operator. ⚡

Data centers are driving a surge in carbon prices in the US Northeast, helping push CO2 costs in the region past California and raising the prospect of higher energy prices for consumers. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

It's wild that Brussels, a city of 1.2 million people, has no outdoor swimming space, in a continent that's predicted to warm twice as fast as the global average.
The city, without a government for nearly a year, is proving itself unable to adapt.

I had the pleasure of attending the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Berlin, the first in a roadshow leading up to #COP30. And the first without the US.
Delegates assured one another of staying the course, but in the halls not everyone was convinced:
