â€ŒïžđŸ‡«đŸ‡·The first poll taken after Saturday’s far left riots in France shows, as predicted, a boost for the Far Right candidate  Marine Le Pen and a backlash against centrist candidates associated with President Emmanuel Macron. The hard left candidate Jean-Luc MĂ©lenchon, accused of fomenting and minimising the violence, rises slightly. 1/

Seeing lots of nonsense like this in my feed. The riots and looting destroy much of what remained of Macron's domestic credibility. Philippe will inevitably be damaged by association. Le Pen is floating on a cloud of French – and also more widely European – rejection of mainstream politics, which the riots will reinforce
Extremely dumb take. MĂ©lenchon, to begin with, is ALREADY the leader of the opposition. And the protest doesn’t “help Le Pen” at all. This person seems to not know anything about French politics, just repeating clichĂ©s that you can find all over the Anglosphere media.

Nonsense from Trump. No immigrants were involved. The ultra left who attacked police and public buildings are almost all white French. The looters who exploited the chaos were very young kids from the poor suburbs, brown and black in many cases but almost certainly French

I've written a long essay for @Parlimag on where things sit in Russia's war against Ukraine There is too much focus on Trump. The bigger risk is that European support for Kyiv is fragmenting exactly when constraints on Putin are beginning to bite theparliamentmagazine.eu/new

The crucial “race for 2nd place” in next Spring’s French presidential election has been thrown wide open, according to an OpinionWay poll today. The centre-left candidate Raphael Glucksmann is now neck and neck on 15% with Edouard Philippe (centre) and Jean-Luc MĂ©lenchon (hard Left) after his crushing victory in the Socialist primary last weekend. 1/

It is madness The US (and Europe) are weakening Ukraine’s position at the very moment Russia’s own capacity to sustain the war is coming under increasing strain This is now the greatest danger for Ukraine. And it is happening just as Putin is running out of options of his own

As the April-May French presidential campaign enters a critical phase, the numbers look good for Marine Le Pen but France may still avoid its first Far Right government since 1944. Here are the three most recent polls - and some history. 1/

Pure hypocrisy on Le Pen’s part. A senior RN official, her ex boyfriend, says that, if elected President, she would halt French aid to Ukraine. One of her main rivals Edouard Phlippe says that would be a betrayal of French security. In response, Le Pen denies nothing. She attacks Macron’s record on Ukr and says she would call a peace conference. Sure. On whose terms if France, like the US, stops helping Kyiv?

Marine Le Pen supposedly abandoned Frexit in 2022. Here she seems to revert to her old line... a Europe of entirely sovereign member states. Will she campaign for that openly or hide behind her sophistry of "reform from the inside"?

Back in Paris for today's massively consequential court decision that will determine whether @MLP_officiel, leader of the far right Rassemblement National, can stand in next year's French presidential election. It is no exaggeration to say that today's court decision will effectively launch the French presidential election campaign. Recall that Le Pen was found guilty in March last year of the fraudulent use of €4 million in EU funds. She was given a jail sentence and a five-year ban from electoral politics. Her appeal in January did not go well. Le Pen’s best hope today when the three appeal judges rule is that they reduce her ban to two years from the date of the original sentence—a term which would expire just in time for her to run. This should not be ruled out, but it seems unlikely. More likely is that the RN candidate—and instant presidential frontrunner—will be her young deputy, Jordan Bardella. Poll after poll has shown Bardella with higher first-round support than his boss—34% in an Ipsos poll on 1 June, compared to 32% for Le Pen. Yet either candidate is certain qualify for the second round. The more important question, therefore, is who between them is best placed to attract over 50% of the vote in round two. I wrote a long essay for Foreign Affairs Magazine exploring why a far right victory is now possible, even if still unlikely, next year. And what the implications would be for France, Europe and the world. foreignaffairs.com/france/ho
