The so called make or break Starmer speech, was clearly a break speech. It wasn’t a disaster in performance, it was a disaster in substance. He gave no reason why people should believe in Labour again. “Don’t replace me because chaos is worse”. Nothing to inspire confidence here.

You can’t have it both ways. You can’t say this was all done properly through official processes, and then admit in black and white that it was a political appointment made by ministers. If ministers made the decision, then ministers are responsible for what they knew, what they checked, and what they chose to ignore.

Questions for Kier Starmer PM. 1) When you told the public 3 times Peter Mandelson had passed security vetting. It was in the middle of a political storm around that appointment. Can you tell us who told you that. 2) We don’t have to be a political experts to know this was a controversial appointment that was going to be scrutinised heavily. So why didn’t you check it was true before you said it?

TINA saves Starmer! Politically, Starmer is not finished in office, Yet ! But he is finished as a credible moral authority. The only thing keeping him upright is TINA, there is no alternative and a parliamentary party fractured into factions that distrust each other more than they trust him. And once a Prime Minister becomes a figure of private ridicule rather than public respect, the end is only a matter of timing. People are not just criticising him they are laughing at him. That is the point of no return.

Starmer has just now admitted he knew Mandelson had continued contact with Epstein and stayed at his Paris flat. Knowing that, he still chose to appoint a close friend to a senior role as Ambassador of the USA. That isn’t a minor oversight. It’s a catastrophic failure of judgement. Of course it was right that Angela Rayner was made to resign the evidence gained from the enquiry showed she had no option, but it was right that inquiry was able to make the decision not the press. How underwhelming the reshuffle is though not much to inspire the electorate here
