Everyone in Europe is running variations of the same baseline out of bounds play, and despite the relative simplicity no one can stop it.

Many coaches on Twitter hate this drill, but we do it every single day. Here’s why: 1. It sets the culture immediately. We once had a recruit watch practice, and after seeing this at the end of warmups he said, “Wow, you guys love defense here.” Exactly. Within the first five minutes of practice, our players know what matters to us, and anyone watching knows too. 2. It creates a standard. A lot of players are more physically capable than they realize, but hesitation gets in the way. When diving on the floor is something you only ask for in a big moment, it feels like a big moment. When you do it every day, it becomes normal. Winning the floor stops feeling heroic and starts feeling expected. De-sensitization is a big part of hustle, 50/50 and toughness. 3. It creates energy. Everyone is moving, yelling, reacting and doing it together. The gym gets loud early, and I’ve always believed the energy you start practice with has a way of bleeding into everything that follows. For 30 seconds, that is a pretty good return. 4. It gives us a small daily dose of movement work. We mix in foot fire, lateral slides and different movement patterns. Is 30 seconds going to transform someone’s agility? No. But small doses repeated every day add up and there is a reaction element to the drill, one leads and all other react. 5. It develops leadership. A different player leads the drill every day, which gives everyone a chance to use their voice, set the standard and take some ownership over the defensive culture instead of everything always coming from the coaches. Is this drill going to magically create a great defensive team? Of course not. But if you can give me many better ways to spend 30 seconds while reinforcing culture, toughness, energy, movement and leadership, I’m listening. Until then, we’ll keep doing it.

Love Illinois’ Off. Rebounding rules A) above ft line you’re back B) below ft line go to glass. 70% of missed shots are going offside or middle C) In corner, attack glass from middle, not baseline D) Off rebounding must be an established priority. You drill it to emphasize it.

Brand new to this idea, reading the book and trying to figure out how to use it. Thought it would be fun on Meet the Teacher night. Anyone have suggestions on how to set that up? What my Qfocus might be? @RightQuestion

Most teams practice beating the trap. Far fewer teams practice handling a defense that keeps creating the next problem. That's where the 2-1-1-1 Press is different.

Coaches if you are not playing Piggy Up Piggy Down at camp…add it to your list. Our kids love it & we love to see them diving on the floor for that loose ball.

Just rewatched the end of @KStateWBB game and have some thoughts. Yes, all the props to Garcia for the game winner, but her drive to tie the game was just as big and impressive. And of course Sides knocking down the 3 from the corner was perfection! But what about the D? (1/3)

We were down 8 with 4:30 to go. The only point SMU made after that was a free throw at the 1:50 mark. Forced them to miss 2 shots that were decent shots, but didn't fall. (2/3)

Finally, 3 times they were forced to put up a shot as the clock was running down, including their last 2 possessions. Forced to take long 3s because they couldn't get thru our D. Overall, just a great road win for a team that is just getting together. #EMAW (3/3)

Don't know how the game will finish, but I'll enjoy listening to @jasonbenetti calling the game! Nice Kansas quote to start the 2nd! #EMAW
