While the referendum made it clear Alberta wants to stay Canadian, the anti-immigration results are making it really hard for Alberta to fight the racism allegations

An appropriate end to Danielle Smith’s self serving political career.
How we got here --> where we're going
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith cleared legislative hurdles for the separatists and amplified their message. Now these activists - the ones who brought her to power - want to bring her down.

Danielle Smith has sold out Alberta and Canada to Trump. I fear the referendum is the excuse MAGA wants to annex Alberta.

It has done none of those things. This is detestable scapegoating.
It cannot be understated: our broken immigration system has caused high unemployment, high home prices and high inflation. It must be fixed and provincial rights strengthened.
Today, the Prime Minister got a copy of our referendum questions including the 9 on immigration and constitutional reforms. If Albertans give us a strong mandate on these questions, our government will get right to work on these needed reforms.
And as I’ve said many times, please vote for Option 1, a strong Alberta within a united Canada, and yes to the rest! 🍁

Thomas Lukaszuk: "It needs to be underscored that according to all polling, and I hope that the results of the referendum will bear this out, about 80% of Albertans never asked for any of the nine questions that are very divisive and hurtful to many. And 80% did not ask for this referendum."

What a colossal waste of $170-200 Million
I suppose since they’re not giving it to Sam Mraiche and they’re not giving it to teachers they need to spend it somewhere.😡

ALBERTA’S HOSPITALS ARE THE EMERGENCY. AN EXPENSIVE NON-BINDING POLL IS THE DISTRACTION.
By Dr. Raj Sherman, ER physician, former MLA. Personal views.
Patients suffer in overcrowded ERs. Ambulances can’t unload. Albertans wait too long for care. That’s the crisis.
Meanwhile, Premier @ABDanielleSmith is spending tens of millions of dollars on ten non-binding referendum questions, several requiring constitutional changes Alberta cannot make alone.
Why not test these ideas in a low-cost poll, then seek a mandate in a general election where Albertans can judge the government's record?
After weighing both sides, I’m voting NO on Questions 1-9 and choosing OPTION 1: REMAIN IN CANADA on Question 10. Here’s why:
1. Immigration control - NO
Pro: Manage growth, housing, jobs and services.
Con: Risk losing needed workers.
My view: Restrictions don’t build hospitals or homes. Planning and infrastructure do.
2. Restrict public services by immigration status - NO
Pro: Control costs and clarify eligibility.
Con: Exclude some taxpaying newcomers from essential services.
My view: Public health and fairness should guide access.
3. Twelve-month wait for social supports - NO
Pro: Control costs and encourage self-sufficiency.
Con: Increase hardship for vulnerable temporary residents and children.
My view: Early support can prevent greater costs later.
4. Healthcare and education premiums for temporary residents - NO
Pro: Recover provincial costs.
Con: Create financial barriers and delay care and education.
My view: Citizens and permanent residents are exempt. Vulnerable temporary residents may struggle to pay.
5. Additional proof of citizenship to vote - NO
Pro: Strengthen election integrity.
Con: Create barriers for eligible voters.
My view: Show that existing safeguards are inadequate before adding new requirements.
6. Provincial appointment of judges - NO
Pro: Greater provincial influence.
Con: Risk political interference.
My view: Judicial independence comes first.
7. Abolish the Senate - NO
Pro: Eliminate an unelected chamber.
Con: Lose regional representation and legislative scrutiny.
My view: Reform before abolition.
8. Opt out of federal programs, retain funding - NO
Pro: Greater provincial flexibility.
Con: Weaken national standards and accountability.
My view: Flexibility must protect universality and accessibility.
9. Provincial laws take priority over conflicting federal laws - NO
Pro: Strengthen provincial autonomy.
Con: Create constitutional uncertainty.
My view: Federalism requires cooperation and the rule of law.
10. Alberta’s future - OPTION 1: REMAIN IN CANADA
Separation: Greater control and potential leverage.
Remain: Avoid economic uncertainty and constitutional disruption.
My view: Resolve Alberta’s legitimate grievances within Confederation.
WHY THIS MATTERS:
Canada was built by immigrants, their descendants and Indigenous peoples.
My parents arrived in 1972 with four young boys. Despite his master’s degree, Dad worked in a lumber mill. Mom picked strawberries, cleaned hotels and sewed clothes. Through hard work and sacrifice, they gave us opportunities. Today, their children and grandchildren contribute in many professions across Alberta and Canada.
My family’s story is the story of countless other families in this province and country.
Poverty on arrival doesn’t determine a family’s future contributions. Immigration must be sustainable. So must opportunity.
IN SUMMARY:
This is a referendum to have a referendum. It’s non-binding and, in my view, a waste of taxpayer money.
Why not seek a mandate in a general election, where Albertans can also judge the government’s record on healthcare and other priorities?
Patients are still waiting. The emergency is real. Government priorities should reflect that.
We must respect every Albertan’s right to decide differently.
I am an immigrant. I am Albertan. I am Canadian.
I believe in a strong Alberta and a strong Canada.
Government should be judged by the problems it solves, not the political questions it asks.
Please vote on October 19 and Please Re-Tweet.

Nothing about healthcare in Alberta will work as long as Danielle Smith's government of Alberta won't fund it properly. Starve the system to break it and privatize to increase revenues to cronies, donors and other assorted grifters is and has always been the UCP plan.
Excellent article by @karenpalmeryvr comparing the very real differences between Alberta's health care system and systems in the nordic countries.
A must read. AB's implementation won't work.

Premier Kenney is right. For the hardcore Alberta separatists, their problem is with modernity. They can't accept a changed, complex and improved world. They cling to a romanticized world that never really existed except in their heads. @jkenney

With all the damage they have done, they need to be eradicated as a political party. It took less than 8 years to get here. This lays directly on Kenny and Smith's feet. He, for letting the fringe in, and her for giving them a leader who fell over herself for them. OVER AND OVER. #FiretheUCP
How will Alberta’s referendum results impact the future of Premier Danielle Smith and her United Conservative Party?
@strategistspod’s @carter_AB and @zainvelji say it’s only a matter of time before the whole thing collapses. Do you agree?

"These recovery centre contracts were among the serious concerns that led me to approach cabinet to call for a public inquiry and ultimately contributed to my resignation as Minister. A year and a half later, the same politically connected individuals keep appearing.." 👇

Another day, another UCP scandal where the same names keep coming up.
Premier Danielle Smith repeatedly claimed her government knew nothing about the contractors selected to build Indigenous recovery centres, insisting those decisions were made independently.
Now, court filings allege the government actually recommended a contractor linked to Sam Mraiche, a businessman with deep connections to the Premier’s inner circle.
So what exactly did the Premier know, and when?
During my time as Infrastructure Minister, these projects fell under Minister Dan Williams’ portfolio, with direct involvement from the Premier’s office.
These recovery centre contracts were among the serious concerns that led me to approach cabinet to call for a public inquiry and ultimately contributed to my resignation as Minister.
A year and a half later, the same politically connected individuals keep appearing, and the questions continue to mount.
Albertans deserve answers about the role played by Minister Williams, the Premier’s office, and who benefited from these contracts.
Enough with the denials and deflection. Albertans deserve full disclosure.
