Ten years ago today, the hashtag #crisppoet was trending. Sadly, only a few tweets remain, including this take by @DrMatthewSweet on lines by Philip Larkin (for 'crisps' read 'craps'). Why were people doing this? Well, it all began at a motorway services...

Our poem of the week comes from Rachael Allen's eagerly awaited second collection God Complex, a visionary, corrosive narrative poem that fuses the end of a toxic relationship with planetary catastrophe.

When Ted Hughes died in 1999, he left an unfinished translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, the great medieval poem about New Year. Here is Hughes relishing the eerie passage in which Gawain seeks for the mysterious, wild Green Chapel of the Green Knight on New Year's Day

ALT Then he spurred Gringolet, and took up the trail. Trees overhung him, the steep slope close to his shoulder. He pushed on down through the rough, to the gorge-bottom. Wherever he turned his eyes, it looked wilder. Nothing anywhere near that could be a shelter. Only cliffy brinks, beetling above him, Knuckled and broken outcrops, with horned crags. Clouds dragging low, torn by the scouts. There he reigned in his horse and puzzled awhile. Turning his doubts over, he searched for the Chapel. Still he could see nothing. He thought it strange. Only a little mound, a tump, in a clearing, Between the slope and the edge of the river, a knoll, Over the river’s edge, at a crossing place, The burn bubbling under as if it boiled.

In the autumn i listened to all the Faber Poetry Podcasts and found Rachael Allen’s poetic curiosity so infectious and informed: here she is with a blistering piece on contemporary publishing tlth.co.uk/difficultandbad. (think I pinched it from you @amonochromdream for which 🙏🏻)

Rachael Allen's new essay brilliantly explores class, prejudice & the lack of imaginative freedom in publishing - the way in which the 'general reader' is patronisingly imagined by those blind to working class complexity.
Read in the wonderful @TL_TH_.

ok i guess it's one of those end of year things... the most extraordinary thing i've done this year is make #theoryplushouseworktheory, a 12h live video art piece i've dreamed of making for years - i'm so massively grateful to @FondationPHI who commissioned me to make it

What can a British picture book for children tell you about the world, about class and about the winter of 1973?
A lot:

My children are getting older and I realised last night that this might the last year I get Father Christmas by Raymond Briggs requested as a bedtime book. So I thought I'd do a thread in appreciation of its genius.

Raymond Briggs’s Christmas realism is a unique form of warmth, writes Jeremy Noel-Tod—and it came during an especially dark winter:

The winter of 1973 was a dark time, writes @jntod—and from it came 28 pages of colour and warmth:

I actually knew a fast-track Civil Servant (who retired as a senior Treasury official) who briefly staffed the Cones Hotline. It was hilarious. People would phone up asking for ice cream; to talk to Lord Cones; & 1 guy called in to say the cones outside his house were moving 🤣🤣 – at Cumbernauld Village, Scotland
