It was a church I started from nothing in Midtown Tulsa.
By every number, it worked.
And I had quietly stopped building.
2/
I’d love to say I caught it early. I didn’t. I was too busy being productive.
Approvals. Budgets. Meetings about meetings.
All good things. None of them the thing I was made for.
3/
I used to wake up thinking about what we could start next.
Now I was waking up thinking about what could go wrong.
I call it Successful Drift.
4/
Failure forces an honest conversation.
Success lets you skip it. For years.
High capacity leaders are rarely undone by failure.
They’re rerouted by success.
5/
Good news: drift is reversible. One honest look. One 1% correction.
Reply DRIFT and I’ll send you the 3 questions I use to spot it.
Leadership at home is still leadership.
Same weight.
Same honesty.
Same call to show up.
You know how to read a room at work.
You notice when a team member is off.
You can tell when a client needs more from you.
That same gift works at your kitchen table.
Here’s a question I find myself asking:
Where is my presence actually landing with the people closest to me?
Your kids don’t need you in some future season when things finally slow down.
They need you in this one.
Family growth is usually less about doing more and more about being fully where you already are.
Your 1% step tonight: One dinner, phone in another room.
Ask one real question and listen to the whole answer.
For years I ran hard after the next number.
More growth.
A bigger room.
One more win that would finally prove I was doing it right.
And it worked, at least on paper. The church grew. The team grew. People said kind things.
But here’s what I couldn’t see at the time. I wasn’t chasing success anymore.
I was chasing peace through success. And that’s a race you’ll never finish.
What changed it for me was something I’d read a hundred times. Ephesians tells us grace is a gift.
Already given.
Not something I earn with a great quarter.
I still love to build.
I still want to win.
I just build differently now.
I’m not working to get somewhere God already put me.
And here’s what I’ve found.
The Lord isn’t off in the distance waiting to see how your year turns out. He’s right there with you.
In the hard conversation with your team on Monday.
In the payroll decision.
In the deal that’s taking longer than you hoped.
You don’t have to carry it like it all depends on you.
So I’m curious.
What are you working hard to earn that’s already been given to you?
Earlier this year I was sitting with a very successful entrepreneur when he said something that hasn’t left me:
“Success hides a multitude of sins.”
Not failure.
Not pressure.
Success.
Because failure forces honesty. Success lets you avoid it. When things are working, you don’t feel the urgency to look deeper.
So what gets hidden? Not the obvious stuff. The subtle things:
The conversations you keep postponing.
The standards you quietly lowered six months ago.
The role you’ve outgrown but refuse to release.
The parts of your leadership that got you here… but won’t take you there.
And here’s where it gets real. Success doesn’t just hide problems. It reinforces them. Because whatever is producing results gets protected.
Even if it’s unsustainable.
Even if it’s misaligned.
Even if it’s slowly costing you your clarity, your relationships, or your purpose.
So instead of asking, “How do I keep this going?”
The better question is: “What am I tolerating right now because things are still working?”
That’s the question most high-performing leaders avoid. And it’s the one that separates those who plateau… from those who evolve.
Because the next level of your business won’t be built on your current success. It will be built on what you’re willing to confront in spite of it.
Don’t let success make you passive.
Let it make you precise.

Most entrepreneurs think their advantage is strategy, execution, or experience. It’s not. Your greatest asset is how you handle challenging times. When pressure hits - growth stalls, people disappoint, decisions carry weight. You don’t rise to the moment, you default to who you are.
In those moments, your response sets the tone for everything:
React → your team feels instability
Avoid → problems compound
Control → people disengage
Stay steady → your team stabilizes
Bring clarity → alignment returns
Move toward tension → trust increases
The leaders who build something that lasts don’t rush through hard moments, they use them.
They slow down and ask:
What is this revealing about me?
Where am I reacting instead of leading?
What needs to change in how I show up?
Then they make small, intentional adjustments. 1% better responses that compound over time. That’s the real advantage. Because in the end, your ability to lead yourself under pressure will determine how far your business can actually go.
Life update: We’re Texans now. 🇨🇱🤠
A few months ago, we made a big leap of faith.
We left home and a 30+ year career behind to step into something new.
Today, we’ve officially launched 320Coach.com.
I’m now working with high-achieving leaders and entrepreneurs who are successful on paper, but hungry for something deeper. Helping them move toward a Lifetime of Better™ by growing their leadership, strengthening their businesses, and expanding their influence in healthy, sustainable ways.
One of the biggest highlights?
My wife has officially joined the business. She’s now coming alongside the wives of the leaders I coach, because no one builds a meaningful life or legacy alone.
We’re loving Texas, our new community, and the sense of alignment this time has brought. It feels like the right place, at the right time, doing the right work.
If you know a leader, founder, or entrepreneur who could use clarity, alignment, or a reset, we’d be honored to be connected.
Grateful for this next chapter.

They're some things we can’t get when we're safe, some things we hunger for we’ve actually insulated ourselves from. We’ve set the stage so well for our comfort that we don’t actually have access to what we’ve asked for. Bill Johnson
Happy 4th of July! Thankful for those who have and are currently serving our country. Home of the free because of the brave.
Helping others take a step toward their dream is the highlight and ultimate fulfillment of my life. I can’t wait to help the next individual begin thriving in all that God has created him or her to do.
