I don't really do much social anymore beyond LinkedIn, but wanted to repost here what I wrote there: "Thirty years ago today, someone pushed a button and launched washingtonpost.com into the world. I wasn't the guy who pushed the button, and I honestly remember almost nothing about the launch since we'd all been up for about 48 hours straight. But I remain incredibly proud of being on that launch team and helping put The Washington Post online. It was especially fitting since I -- like so many of my generation -- was lured into this business by "All the President's Men." Those early days remain the most memorable of my career. We had only a vague idea of what we were doing, and the good news was that when we screwed up, no one seemed to care anyway. Less than a month after launch, we had the tragic crash of TWA 800. The only people in the newsroom when the crash happened were the sports guys -- me and Gagan Nirula. And there was no remote publishing yet. Everyone had to drive into the office when news happened. So, for an hour, keeping the site updated relied on the judgment of the sports guys. This may very well have increased the speed of all senior editor cars headed to Arlington. But, as they always do, the sports guys did just fine. In those days, we were working in raw HTML code -- the acronym CMS didn't yet exist. And we would sometimes accidentally delete a character from the code and the whole home page would just go blank. We'd spend 20 minutes trying to find our mistake, and no one from the print newsroom called and no one from the public complained. But we kept learning and kept churning and the audience eventually showed up and grew exponentially. And -- if I may say so myself -- over time, we created one hell of a great and innovative website. It was very special to celebrate the anniversary of the launch with 150 former colleagues last weekend in Arlington. I worked with such incredible people at washingtonpost.com -- both in those early days and when I came back as executive editor in 2004 -- and that group has gone on to do amazing things all over the industry. There were a lot of memories shared last Saturday night and new ones created. (And it didn't hurt that the party ended with my Knicks winning an NBA title). Anyway, below is the launch page from June 19, 1996. And before some young'un asks why there's only one photo on the page, read up on "33.6 baud." I've also always wondered how Kent Mercker feels about being the only person pictured on the launch page -- if he even knows. It wasn't his best night on the mound, but seems like it'd still be pretty cool to be the answer to that trivia question. To all my former colleagues, happy 30th!"

My first professional byline ran in The Washington Post sports section in May 1987, when I was a sophomore at @AmericanU. The lead is awful; the rest of the story was no better. The point is that this story ran in a section that -- as of today -- no longer exists. I still cannot get my head around that fact. So much talent passed through that department, and I learned so much from so many of them. I served as reporter, newsaide, copy editor, agate guy and composing room stooge and each of those experiences taught me something. (The composing room lesson was: Don't mess around with guys with Exacto knives). I did eight years there before taking a job across the river to launch a little experiment called washingtonpost.com. That worked out pretty well for me, but I'll never forget what I learned and who I learned it from in that thrilling circus located at 15th & L.

Excited to celebrate the launch of @the_lalocal, a new independent newsroom bringing more original reporting to communities across Los Angeles. With early coverage in Inglewood, South L.A. & Koreatown—and support from @JournalismProj—it's expanding access to trusted local news. thelalocal.org

He also tied for the team lead in interceptions. #Jets
Garrett Wilson ended the season as the Jets’ leading receiver (395 yards). He hasn’t caught a ball since Week 6.

The #Jets are a force that defies science. Do you know how hard it is to lose 10 games in a row in the NFL after you HAVE SCORED FIRST? That is an incredible achievement. When probability runs up against the #Jets, probability scientifically stands a 0 percent chance.

And we have no interceptions this entire season. It's hard enough to be bad. But then you pile on being historically unlucky. I mean, not even a deflected pass or a Hail Mary pick?#Jets
NFL fumble recovery % through Wk 11 #Jets are last at 20%. The gap between them & 31st is larger than the gap between any two teams. How do you have a 20% win rate on a coin flip? Stuff like this makes me think there is a higher power involved in the Jets franchise's struggles

Classic #Jets: We are winning by keeping our own offense off the field.

To qualify for this title, the burger has to make you regret consuming it for three hours every Sunday afternoon. #Jets

"This is unwatchable," says the guy who's watched every minute of every game this season. I'm the old version of that kid who went viral last week. I feel for that kid. At least I don't have as many years left of this as he does. #Jets

I apologize for calling this team the #SameOldJets. That's an insult to the teams who earned that nickname. This is far worse.

So sad. One of the great #Jets. And not just as a player but as a guy who loved the franchise, the fans and life.

Sit Kotite, #Jets fans, and let me make my Gase: This is the worst team I've ever seen. We play w/ no Bowles. I never see a single player Groh. I may need to put my TV in a Coslet for the rest of the season or else I might throw an Ulbrich thru it. Woody, just Saleh the team.

There was a mosquito in our apartment dive-bombing me all morning. I swear I have not seen it since I put the #Jets game on. That bug is smarter than I am.

If you are a #Jets fan, there are two things you know for sure right now: 1) This team is incapable of beating anyone. 2) Somehow ... someway, it will still win three games and end up picking 4th in a draft with three stud QBs.

This is the best the #Jets social media team can do. And I truly admire the effort. They have nothing to work with.
