With Election Day Tuesday, I want to make a personal ask to anyone in the 2nd Middlesex Senate District: please vote for my friend Burhan Azeem.
I’ve known Burhan for more than six years, and I’ve had a front-row seat to how he approaches problems, with curiosity, humility, determination, collaboration and a relentless focus on getting things done.
Our state is an incredible place, but too many people are struggling to afford to live here, buy a home, raise a family, and build a future.
We need leaders willing to challenge the status quo and do the hard work of solving those problems.
I believe Burhan is that leader. I’m proud to give him my support for the Massachusetts Senate, and I hope you’ll consider a vote for Burhan on Tuesday.

More housing is possible, and we need to show the whole state how.
Please, please vote by September 1st!

“Boston can say they know what to do, but they have not done it. We like to think Boston is especially unique, but we are a city in a state, just like every other city in a state in the country. We just have this unique element in relation to the state zoning code.” @jessekb

Nithya went to planning grad school at MIT at the same time as some big YIMBYs, bravely tried to take on the failures of Measure ULA, and speaks highly credibly about the details of land use reform
These are pro-housing signals that are impossible to fake.

Housing reform is picking up steam in Massachusetts.
The state now requires boards to weigh the broader public need for housing in variance decisions.
Still in play: statewide duplex legalization, YIGBY, and guardrails on discretionary site plan review.

The House passed the Economic Development Bill with major housing wins, including YIGBY, statewide Site Plan Review reform, and more than $500M in investments to support housing and economic growth.
Now it's time for the Senate to finish the job.

Meanwhile because of the MBTA Communities act (which doesn't apply to Boston-proper) many commuter rail stations throughout eastern Massachusetts have higher density, by-right zoning for multifamily housing than the City of Boston does near any subway or trolley station.
In too many places, outdated zoning has restricted housing near transit — limiting opportunity & driving up rents.
Through Block by Block, @NYCMayor's bold housing plan, we'll expand housing near subways & buses to make it easier for people to live by the transit they rely on.
Can you imagine Michelle Wu standing next to Maura Healey and the Exec Dir of the state's largest YIMBY group, behind a podium that says "LET THEM BUILD"

Zohran just cited Minneapolis, Austin, and Auckland as cities that lowered housing costs via upzoning
certified ball knowledge, Auckland is a deep YIMBY cut
We could do this in Boston...it would just take leadership that is actually committed to ending our housing crisis.
You absolutely love to see it.

"Zoning reform alone is insufficient to meet the scale of need for housing production. A comprehensive agenda is needed to address regulatory barriers to housing production, spanning building, fire, energy, septic system, wetlands, and stormwater rules." @BosIndicators

Biggest change builds on the YIMBY ballot measures that passed in Nov + the state environmental review reforms, for almost all projects that need a zoning change.
