Today we're standing up XBOX LABS (labs.xbox.com). Here is the note that I sent to the team:
Team,
The first video games emerged some 75 years ago. In the time since, there have been booms and busts, but every year there are more great games to play, more devices to play them, and best of all, more people than ever playing. That growth helped make XBOX what it is today, and we've helped shape the industry in return, from bringing hard drives to consoles and online gaming through Xbox Live to Game Pass and cloud gaming, alongside franchises that have brought millions of people together.
In recent weeks, we've seen games rapidly decompiled and rebuilt to run on hardware they were never originally designed to support. Windows PC builds have been translated to run on Apple Silicon or ported to run inside a browser through WebAssembly and WebGPU, the latter now approaching 90% global browser support. Perhaps more surprisingly, we've seen many of the biggest games in the world have been remixed into the source code of another.
These experiments challenge long-held assumptions about our industry: the tether between software and hardware, the boundary between creation and play, and how people discover and experience games. While it is hard to predict the future of gaming, it is easy to see the possibilities in making great games easier to access, giving old games new life and allowing more players to become creators and co-creators. These are unmistakably good outcomes for players, even when (and sometimes because) they challenge our existing business models.
To explore these possibilities, I’ve asked Scott to stand-up XBOX LABS, a small group of game makers, engineers and scientists whose job is to turn emerging ideas into things our players and developers can experience. We'll build in the open, learn from what people do, and measure success by whether more people are playing and creating.
I think XBOX has an important role to play here. Coding became the first major workload for agents because they can write, run, and test software. Games share many of those same properties, and people spend more than 72 billion hours a year playing XBOX games, roughly five times the estimated time spent writing code worldwide. We've spent 25 years learning how to make great games, and I want our game makers to help shape what these new technologies make possible. As we learn, we’ll share the tools we build with developers across the industry, just as we always have.
Our priorities aren't changing. We remain committed to the 4Cs, to making great games, to our hardware and to being responsible stewards of IP and the communities built around it. LABS gives us a way to explore new technology that is game design led without abandoning the work already underway.

Lucky coincidence the labs are only successfully cracking esoteric math problems and not the problems where a solution would give the winner an asymmetric commerical advantage.

Check out what @AndrewWarner and @ABrakhane had to say about Hindsight on The Next New Thing Podcast:

Every time you let Opus 5.5 work on a project overnight, have it vibe-code a quick 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗽 like this first. In the morning, you'll see at a glance what's done and what's left.
Then give it 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗯𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗽𝘀:
→ Name it project-map, set its effort to medium, and preload a design skill
→ The first time, it asks what style you like and saves it to memory. After that, every map fits your taste and the project at hand
→ Call it before you let Opus run on its own. It draws the map in the background in a few minutes while the main session keeps coding on high, and it updates the map after every milestone
→ The map shows four things: the parts the project breaks into, how far each part has gotten, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻, and what to do next (if you don't make the call, it goes ahead with that)
Send this prompt to Opus 5.5 in Claude Code 👇
"Set up a subagent that only draws project maps:
1. Create project-map in ~/.claude/agents: model: opus, effort: medium, memory: user. Preload the design skills I have installed (for example impeccable). It needs to read the code, git history, and issues (if there are any). It only writes to a .project-map/ folder in the project, and adds that folder to .gitignore.
2. The first time, run it in the foreground so it can ask me what style I like: dark or light, and one accent color. It saves my answer to memory and follows it every time. If I already have dashboard-builder, reuse the style it saved and don't ask me again.
3. The map is one HTML file that opens with a double-click. It breaks the project into a few main parts and marks each one done, in progress, not started, or stuck. For stuck parts, say what they're waiting on. Milestones live in the map: if I can't name them, read the README and commit history and propose a first version for me to edit. At the top, show how many things are left before the next milestone and a suggested next step, and highlight the parts that changed since the last update. Pick the other panels for this project; don't use a template.
4. Add a rule to ~/.claude/CLAUDE.md: before you run on your own for a long stretch, have project-map draw a version in the background; update it after every milestone; when I ask "where are we?", answer from the map. Follow the map's suggested next step. Put anything that needs my call in the map, and if I don't answer, keep going with the default. Leave any existing dashboard rule as it is.
Show me the contents of the files you'll create or change, then explain the whole flow in words a 10-year-old could follow. Don't write anything until I confirm."

Great advice for landing interviews, this actually works.
Another one: put yourself in the shoes of the person in charge of hiring. Remember that they are hyper pressed for time, what can you do to stand out in the shortest window of time? There are many ways to stand out.
Do some research and work up front. If you just DM them with “I’d love to work together without even looking at the jobs page consider yourself a time waster.
Instead, research everything you can about the company and roles available, even go as far as to build something you think would solve a problem for them, make it polished and stand out to the point you’re extremely proud of it (top 1% is not hard to do these days if you put a tiny bit of extra time)
There are a lot of “hacks” you can take advantage of. Be creative.
so you didn't go to an ivy league, have a chip on your shoulder, aren't satisfied with your current role and want to work in applied AI
here's what i'd recommend you do immediately
1) get on X and LinkedIn (if you're seeing this congrats)
2) clean up that profile pic (get a headshot srs, use ChatGPT Images)
3) fix your profile, headline and bio (emulate mine if you need a reference)
4) start posting daily about your applied ai learnings, experiments, commentary
what you're trying to do is clear the minimum bar that your profile is actively contributing to the applied ai space. you don't need 5000+ followers. you don't even need engagement.
all you're trying to do is not look like a bot and look like somebody who actually thinks about and works on this stuff.
once you have this, start searching for hiring managers posting about new roles they are hiring for.
you're going to want to tune your feed so these come in as quickly as possible after they post. before your feed is tuned, just actively search for them. use grok bot or muse or codex to do this.
understand this - hiring managers, especially new hiring managers, want to pick the right person. as much as a recruiter makes their lives easier, it also takes them out of their own hiring and filtering process. them posting means they are actively engaged in the search.
this is your opportunity.
like the post and reply that you are DMing them. KEEP IT SHORT.
this does two things:
1) creates two notifications for them, for the like and for the comment
2) creates a pull for them to check the DM or click on your profile
DO NOT overwhelm them with a long message like "I'm so interested! I have 5 years of experience in program management, I just graduated from X university, etc etc."
first of all, it’s thirsty. second of all, nothing you say in that comment will be enough for them to pique interest unless you went to a top school or work at a top company (and if you did, why so thirsty?) so don't do it. stand out with brevity and restraint.
your goal is to hook them to see your profile, your post feed, your pinned/featured post(s). congrats, you just bypassed the application/resume blackhole and got them to see a much larger slice of how you think.
if you've never done this, do it. i guarantee you it will transform your job search.
