Under pressure from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Trump administration may be within days of launching a nuclear strike on Iran. The target would be Pickax Mountain in central Iran, where Israeli intelligence claims the Iranian government has restarted its nuclear enrichment program. No conventional weapon in the American arsenal can penetrate 300 feet of solid granite to destroy the tunnels where enrichment is supposedly taking place. The only military option is a nuclear strike. Netanyahu has been pushing hard for one. “Bibi calls Trump about it every day,” says an informed observer. Netanyahu is cornered and desperate. After last week’s election results, he can’t form a government unless Trump intervenes directly in Israeli politics and brokers a deal with other parties that gives Netanyahu 61 seats in the Knesset. Otherwise, he is out as prime minister and on his way to ignominy, investigations and possibly jail. Netanyahu must stay close to Trump. He needs this war. To that end, he’s applied maximum pressure to his closest allies in the administration, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and CENTCOM commander Brad Cooper. Both oppose a negotiated settlement to the war they’ve so grievously mismanaged; both are pushing to restart major combat operations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA director John Ratcliffe are also following Netanyahu’s lead, as are leaders of the Democratic Party. In a recent meeting on the subject, former president Barack Obama said he opposes the current Iran peace deal being drafted in Doha. The rest of America’s longtime allies in the Middle East are terrified by the prospect of more war. On September 27th, Netanyahu flew secretly to Abu Dhabi to enlist the UAE in his lobbying effort for a final attack on Iran. The Emiratis refused. After eight months of conflict, Gulf economies are teetering. So are global energy and fertilizer markets. They won’t recover soon. Globally, there are a total of about 850 supertankers used to transport oil from producers to the rest of the world. In October alone, 11 of them were badly damaged in Hormuz. At this pace, a global depression is imminent. A nuclear strike would radically accelerate the destruction. Fallout from a ground explosion at Pickax Mountain would contaminate the Persian Gulf, poisoning the water supply for 100 million people. And those are just some of the immediate consequences for the region. The rest of the world is every bit as exposed. No country other than the United States has ever used a nuclear weapon in war. Some would like to. An American nuclear attack on Iran would set a new precedent. The Russians have already told at least two other governments that an American nuclear strike on Iran would free them to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. Pakistan and India would be tempted to do the same against each other, as would North Korea against Seoul. After the first nuclear strike, World War Three is inevitable. That war would be short and final. We’ve been sleepwalking toward this moment for months. Since February, the administration has quietly rewritten America’s nuclear doctrine to make first use of so-called “battlefield nukes” easier and therefore more likely. No one in Washington in either party seems bothered by this. Now we’re on the brink of it. Close observers say Trump is likely to decide by next weekend whether or not to use nuclear weapons. That would be November 7, six days from now. To his credit, he’s hesitating. At the moment, Trump is listening to his vice president, JD Vance, and to his envoy and friend Steve Witkoff, both of whom argue a deal with Iran can be made. They’re right, though it won’t be simple. The Iranians are famously frustrating to negotiate with under any circumstances, and elements of that government have become more radical since Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his family were killed in February. After decades of isolation, even relatively moderate Iranian leaders seem confused by how decisions are made in the West. (There is a widespread belief in Tehran, for example, that the United States government controls Israel.) But overall, people who have spoken to decision-makers in Iran say there is consensus there that more war is bad for everyone and a deal is worth making. One group that hasn’t been consulted so far is the global population — the hundreds of millions of people who will be killed along with their children if Trump is pushed by Netanyahu into launching a nuclear strike next week. Now would be the time for them to speak up.

Halal truck at the election night party. Chicken and rice for all.
Real question, if you raise $2.4M on the last day of the campaign what do you do with it? Can you even plow it all into ads at that point?

Benjamin Netanyahu accuses Arab-Israelis, who voted in unusually large numbers, of “stealing” the election. Likud and coalition parties had succeeded in banning Arab parties before the election, but were overruled in court.

Pitching completly unworkable and ridulous ideas is more fun with its other people that would need to make it happen.
.@amyot_65 We, @JimWatsonOttawa, tried for #Canada150 in 2017. The Feds said no. When centre block construction is done, before everyone moves back in (reducing any security risks) this should 100% get done! #ottcity @MarkJCarney @mflalonde @vankayak @ctvottawa @NHL @Senators

Very happy birthday to former long time employee - right hand man - and friend Danny Singh. Once rented a Spider-Man suit to please my grandkids. Was not comfortable with dogs but took my Bulldog Teddy to an emergency vet visit in the rain. Teddy wouldn’t budge out of the car!

Position statement. If Zionism were simply about establishing the right of Jews to live safely wherever they are, including in their ancestral homeland, I would be a Zionist. But this isn't what Zionism is about. It is, and always has been, about creating a Jewish-majority state in a land where the majority of people are not Jewish. This necessarily means either removing most non-Jews or denying them citizenship. Zionists have done, and are still doing, both. I believe in the right of ALL people to live safely wherever they are. I oppose every means used to drive people out of their homes and lands: mass murder, ethnic cleansing, systematic violence, denial of citizenship, violation of basic human rights. Zionism uses all these means to create and maintain its Jewish state. Therefore I am an anti-Zionist.

A day after far right Israeli Rabbi Dov Lior issued a religious ruling permitting settlers to steal olives from Palestinian orchards in the occupied West Bank, masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian olive harvesters and a visiting delegation of diplomats from Belgium, France, and Poland. While the attack on European diplomats has drawn international attention, Palestinians have faced this violence for decades. Every olive harvest season, settlers attack farmers, destroy trees, and terrorize Palestinian communities in an ongoing campaign of land theft and dispossession. It is long past time for governments, including Canada, to move beyond empty words and impose meaningful sanctions on Israel, including its settlement enterprise that permits these attacks to take place.
🚨BREAKING: A diplomatic delegation comprising representatives from France, Belgium, and Poland came under attack by Israeli settlers while attending the olive harvest in the Palestinian village of Taybeh, in the occupied West Bank. Footage appears to show Bernard Baudoux, mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries in northern France, on the ground following the assault. Masked Israeli settlers also smashed the windows of a Belgian consular vehicle and demanded identification documents.

Sutcliffe retorted he asked Leiper for ideas and he contributed nothing. So, an uninspiring group of white men, three wearing ties and one open collar. Sutcliffe will win re-election easily.

Anyway, I voted advance today. Leiper for Mayor, Michael Tay for council and Keelin Pringnitz for public school trustee. In and out in two minutes. Be sure to vote, even if the Mayoral choices all kind of suck. Tay, I think, would be a good councilor. He has good experience.

🧵There was an Ottawa Mayoral debate last night in Centretown, so I went. None of them made me exactly excited to go vote this morning. Sutcliffe was the most polished. He's the incumbent and a former journalist (as am I, so bias) so that's not surprised. But he's...

Leiper said you needed a meeting to become anti-child poverty? On strong mayor powers, Sutcliffe said he hasn't and won't use them and passed all his budgets and initiatives by building consensus. Leiper said when you have no imagination its easy to get support.

Certainly, Leiper and Sutcliffe can't stand one another. Leiper did have a few good lines. Asked what person you met made you change your mind on a policy, Sutcliffe mentioned a meeting that made him commit to ending child poverty.

I left after an hour (the debate was two), got a doner kebab and walked home. Flipping on Rogers, Sutcliffe was still arguing with the moderator. I walked away not liking any of them. I get the sense they have all debated enough that they all are tired of and hate each other.

infrastructure like transit is able to get people where they need to go. (The transit system is not up to the job, but otherwise this is right.) IIRC Saravanamuttoo wants the feds to run a shuttle bus system...dude, just fund OC Transpo FFS. Leiper went for the cheap...

at "Sutcliiffe." Which is fair. But do it respectfully. Don't say his name like a slur, you come off sounding like a jerk. Also, on RTO, Sutcliffe gave a reasonable answer -- our job isn't to go after the feds on decisions they won't change, it's to ensure city...
