Before the Civil War, “disunion” rhetoric helped create competing sectional identities and increasingly irreconcilable interests. NORTH. SOUTH. US. THEM. Keep that history in mind when you watch this. Trump is arguing that higher energy prices are a small price to pay to keep Iran from being able to destroy an American city. Which cities does he choose? LOS ANGELES. SAN DIEGO. By itself, maybe that means nothing. But listen to the cities Trump repeatedly reaches for when America needs an example of danger, disorder or failure: CHICAGO. PORTLAND. BALTIMORE. NEW YORK. PHILADELPHIA. DETROIT. OAKLAND. WASHINGTON, D.C. LOS ANGELES. The contexts aren't the same. Crime. Riots. Immigration. Federal intervention. And now hypothetical destruction by a foreign adversary. But the documented examples share something: They are overwhelmingly heavily Democratic cities. Trump has even explicitly called some of them “Democrat-run cities” while using them as examples of violence and failure. We searched for comparable recurring rhetoric involving major cities such as Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Jacksonville, Oklahoma City and Tulsa. The evidence was much thinner. That doesn't prove Trump chooses these cities BECAUSE they're Democratic. And it isn't a complete census of everything Trump has ever said. But history suggests a more consequential question than motive. These aren't Democratic cities instead of American cities. They're American cities. Millions of Americans live there. So what happens when political geography becomes identity? When Americans stop hearing: “THAT COULD HAPPEN TO US.” And start hearing: “THAT COULD HAPPEN TO THEM.” In 1861, Lincoln pleaded: “We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies.” The most dangerous word in a divided country may eventually become: “THEM.”
