When I explain it to friends outside of NYC, my own words are almost hard (for me) to believe.

“One of Barnes & Noble’s pandemic best-sellers had been “Middlemarch,” bought largely by people younger than forty-five.”
Alarm about declining interest in books is perpetual. But, as bookselling reaches unexpected heights, James Daunt, the chief executive of Barnes & Noble, thinks a different future is at hand. newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

I spent a year working the apps for DoorDash, Uber, Amazon and more; saw disturbing things; brought people single cookies; probably delivered drugs; smashed up my nose; met people who made insane journeys to get you pad thai; wondered what we’re doing here simonandschuster.com/books/D…

“These days, DraftKings ads blanket ESPN coverage, and this past March the companies enabled customers to link their ESPN and DraftKings accounts. It’s a partnership, a press release explained, “that goes beyond a traditional marketing arrangement, redefining how fans engage with sports.”
After a decorated 24-year run at ESPN, Nicole Noren resigned in protest. She couldn’t go along with the network’s all-out embrace of gambling. For the first time publicly, in @CJR, Noren shares the deeply personal reasons behind her decision. cjr.org/the-interview/nicole…

Huge news out of NYC, and a public investment model that has legs at various levels of government: city helping build research hubs and then sharing in proceeds from intellectual property generated there. Quantum computing is the tech frontier. nytimes.com/2026/10/14/nyreg…

The Grace Hopper conference--the largest gathering of women in tech--was abruptly cancelled due to insufficient funding. Women are underrepresented in tech and AI globally. Truly, society is losing out by not investing in women in tech. forbes.com/sites/sandycarter…

We need to be thinking about human authored books less in terms of the news of the day and more in terms of long term conservation/ preservation— the way we might think about preserving nature. The problem is you can’t see a canon of literature the way you can see, say, Yosemite.
Literature was going to have a rough road regardless, but the epistemic ability of the people in charge here all but guarantees that it is finished as a human endeavour. There is only one way to read fiction by humans—find stuff published before 2024. theatlantic.com/books/2026/1…
