I joined @BBCWorld last night to talk about the EU’s long-anticipated $1bn pair of fines against Google and how the decisions may impact transatlantic relations.
When the cost of eggs spiked in 2022, economists said bird flu alone was to blame. Anyone who suspected corporate price-fixing was dismissed as a crank.
Inside the alleged egg cartel the experts said couldn’t exist.

Somewhat revised "American Schools of Antitrust" for those who wish to print on a tea towel. Didn't include contemporary figures
A few hundred trade unionists have taken over Schuman with a gigantic "NO EU INC" banner in protest of the Commission's corporate law proposal.
"If you can't fix it, you have to stop it," @etuc_ces General Secretary Esther Lynch told me. "There isn't one single improvement on the table for employment rights." Unions are irked the Commission didn’t go thought the formal channel for labour matters.

If you read one thing today, make it @PhelimKine's excellent POLITICO Magazine profile of Jacob Helberg, a fascinating character in the Trump admin who has been shaped by Silicon Valley and is now a leading voice in the U.S.-China tech rivalry:

the Kennedy Center except its the Palast der Republik and DC gets a neo-Baroque replacement.
The Kennedy Center Board voted nearly unanimously to close the building immediately for safety reasons and prepare for reconstruction. Renovation cannot begin until the D.C. Circuit rules on the Board’s approved name.
In the meantime, $17M raised by President Trump has been placed in the Kennedy Center account to keep it afloat.
Fwiw, the full Dickens quote is a lament for the overuse of superlatives in describing the present – not that it was actually the best of times and the worst of times. #SOTEU
“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” @vonderleyen quoted Dickens to describe today’s world in her #SOTEU address. Canada’s PM @MarkJCarney attended as guest of honour and will address the European Parliament tomorrow.🇪🇺
Hasan Piker wandering the halls of the European Parliament, ECR holding a Charlie Kirk vigil outside the hemicycle — EU politics is feeling particularly America-pilled at the moment.
It goes under appreciated how consistent parts of the Trump administration are with their Obama, Biden admin predecessors on some topics. This, for e.g., could easily be Gina Raimondo speaking.
Ribera ‘respectfully curious’ as to why a US judge spared Google a break up in its ad tech case – a development that has dimmed the possibility of structural measures in Europe's own case.

Complainants, civil society groups lament that proving Google holds a monopoly has turned out to be far easier, on both sides of the Atlantic, than doing anything about it. politico.eu/article/us-court…
No need to break up Google in order to remedy its monopolization of the ad tech market, rules the U.S. judge on the case. Thus the EU will have to go it alone on a break-up of Google in its own case, as it has previously said may be the only solution. courtlistener.com/recap/og-l…
.@EU_Commission spox response to the ruling: "[The] EU antitrust process remains independent from the one in the US. The Commission will assess whether the measures proposed by Google effectively put an end to the infringement in the EU."
Some entertaining Gen Z ethnography in BRUZZ today: sitting in circles on pavement is considered cool and wearing a coats is passé ("I’d rather be cold and wear a nice outfit than warm and wear an ugly one.") bruzz.be/actua/jongeren/herk…
Sciences Po may throw it's hat in the ring to become the go-to institution for EU studies, much to the dismay of Brussels' existing SciencePo (at @IEE_Bruxelles)
French university Sciences Po is considering opening a campus in Brussels, arguing that the EU capital is “paradoxically” missing its own elite academic institution.
