Quite a #seismic day in the NY/NJ Metropolitan area, with a 4.8 Magnitude #earthquake this morning -- and #aftershocks this evening !! This morning's shocks were widely felt, stretching from the #Baltimore/DC area to #Pennsylvania and up the coast to #Connecticut.

This morning's #earthquake in the NY/NJ metro area was likely a "widely felt, shallow" earthquake. They are rare in this area. Likely there will be little to no damage in most places. But it was very widely felt, in #NewJersey, #NewYorkCity, #LongIsland, and in #Connecticut.

The rocking and shaking of this morning's #earthquake was dramatic and widely felt. But likely not very damaging. As a #geology student at Stony Brook University -- and as a longtime California resident visiting #LongIsland this week -- the rumbles felt very familiar !!

The New York metro area is not familiar with #earthquakes -- there are few earthquake events, spaced apart by many years. So, many residents have not experienced earthquakes -- ever. There have been others, felt in #NewJersey, #NewYork and #LI. Some happened back in the 1980s.

Widely felt earthquake on Long Island, rated at 4.8 Magnitude. These widely felt, shallow earthquakes have happened from time to time in the New York metro area. Generally little damage is seen. Please refer to the USGS -- US Geological Survey -- website for more details.
