I design how people trust while most people are busy building the infrastructure. The financial stack is being rebuilt from the ground up. Five years ago, I made a deliberate bet to work exclusively in fintech because it's one of the hardest design problems out there. You can't fake trust. You can't dark-pattern your way into getting someone to hand over their savings. Every pixel either earns confidence or destroys it. Over the years, I've built brand identities, UI systems, and motion design for neobanks, stablecoin protocols, and agentic payment products. Explore my work here: behance.net/delulumakes

My edited fintech AI brand film crossed 5M views. No crew. No studio. No production budget, just AI tools and direction. 5 decisions made it work, plus the one mistake I'll never repeat:

The mistake: v1 showed the product UI in the first 10 seconds. Retention died there. People don't care about your interface until they care about their problem. Now my rule is fixed: emotion first, interface last.

AI didn't make this a cheaper film. It made it a possible film for every fintech without a Nike budget.

Mercury became the default bank of the startup world. Not because of rates. Because of design. I broke down how Mercury's design earns trust faster than almost any fintech alive. 6 decisions every founder should steal:

6/ Even the dark mode feels like a terminal, not a casino. Same palette logic, same restraint. Dark UI isn't the problem in fintech, undisciplined dark UI is.

All six decisions do one job: shorten the distance between "what is this?" and "wire the runway in." That's trust velocity.

Holding dollars and paying in them are different behaviors. Merchants still price local, so the off-ramp just moves to checkout.

The orchestration and routing layer is the first thing labs absorb. That's a feature, not a moat.
For the first time in ~3 years, it feels like the AI table has been flipped over. Yes, the labs and hyperscalers will have the highest chance of resetting it before everyone else, given their vast capital, frontier model, and compute advantages. But there is now a window for a new ecosystem to emerge. A "rebel alliance," which is what we're calling it at @USV. We are excited by open weight models, distributed compute, human-aligned agents, routing, open source harnesses, the orchestration layer, and a lot more. Basically, anything that gives people and enterprises powerful intelligence while maintaining tight incentive alignment, we're into it.

The magic of Pix and UPI is that nothing converts at the QR scan. Spend in USD bolts an FX moment right where the rail was engineered to be invisible, and whoever quietly eats that spread decides if it actually works.
The missing payments layer in Neobanks Most neobanks have built around cards. But that's not the primary way people pay in many countries - Brazil: Pix processes 80% more transactions than credit + debit cards combined. - India: a whopping 82% of the all digital payments are on UPI - Philippines: 60% of all digital payments use InstaPay, and just 18% use cards US, Europe & others built digital payments around cards long before smartphones, and so thats deeply embedded into everyday life Most emerging markets, however, digitized payments much later.. in a world of smartphones & internet access And so they could build real-time-payment systems (RTPs) like UPI, Pix & InstaPay: Instant payments, available 24/7, and as easy as scanning a QR code to pay. The result? RTPs have become the dominant way people pay day to day. Just look at the merchant acceptance: - India ~5x more merchants accept UPI than cards - Philippines: ~6x more accept InstaPay than cards China: ~3x more accept QR payments than cards Argentina: ~2x more accept Interoperable QR than cards For anyone living in, or traveling to, these countries, RTPs are non-negotiable. I witnessed this first hand in Argentina with @joinpeanut - spending USDC directly via local QR everywhere. It's a game changer. And this is the missing payments layer: the ability to spend on local payment rails, while saving in USD.
