I worked on this for YEARS and am finally able to share it: One of the biggest obstacles for Jewish people fighting antisemitism has been a problem recognized by countless scholars over many years: Jews are notoriously difficult to categorize into a single group or even 2 or 3 clearly identified protected classes under the law. Worse still, many Jews themselves don’t know how exactly how to describe their Jewishness or how they fit in. This has presented a serious and frustrating problem both in every day life (often causing internal strife between Jewish groups themselves), and in courtrooms across the country where dismissal of antisemitism-based cases have too often hinged on courts misunderstanding who we are as a people. We know that Jews are not a monolith. But what are we? Who are we? In my piece just published in @Commentary Magazine, I present what I consider the seminal work of my life. I ask, “who are the Jewish people, really?” What took me many years to discover is actually remarkably obvious when you see it. It is a universal truth that simply needed to be discovered and explained. I introduce the reality that Jews fit quite neatly into 5 categories of people and present my P.R.I.Z.E. framework: the first-ever mapping of the five Authentic dimensions of Jewish identity.
