OTD in 2013: The most intense staredown in NLCS history had nothing to do with a pitch. Game 6 at Busch, the anthem ends, and everybody heads for the dugout. Everybody except Joe Kelly and Scott Van Slyke, who just stood there. Cardinals taking the field for warmups, grounds crew finishing up, a Dodgers teammate even slid a helmet onto Van Slyke’s head for safety, and neither guy would blink. Twelve minutes of pure stubbornness, until the home plate umpire threatened to throw both of them out before a single pitch. Kelly said he always waits for the other team to leave after the anthem, Van Slyke caught on and decided he was not going to be the one to flinch, and both of them still claim they won. Kelly says his step toward the dugout was a deke. Van Slyke threw his arms in the air like he had just won. The real winner that night was the Cardinals, who went on to blow out the Dodgers and punch their ticket to the World Series. Kelly got the last laugh, and the best part is we are still arguing about it 13 years later. So, Cardinals fans, who really won the standoff?
