2/ New paper: Stabilising Generative Models of Attitude Change. We render two families of classic theory — cognitive dissonance (Festinger, Aronson) and self-perception (Bem) — as runnable simulations using Concordia, then put them through canonical experiments.

1/ Would you eat a worm for science? In a 1975 experiment, most people who were told they had to — then unexpectedly offered a way out — went ahead and ate it anyway. We rebuilt that experiment, and two more, as LLM-agent simulations to explore classic theories of attitude change

I was exiled from @DMGToronto three years ago, but I still have so much love for the community. Now, it's insolvent.
A sad end, but I hope we can carry on the spirit of DMG – radical inclusion, free self-expression, and transformative play. My thoughts: soand.so/

Very happy to launch Concordia, a library for generative agent-based modeling where you build simulations like tabletop roleplaying games! The game master (storyteller) is an agent who controls the environment where player agents interact, tracks state and can call external tools
Extremely excited to share our work on Generative Agent-Based Modeling. We are open sourcing Concordia, a platform for creating social simulations with language models.

Language-mediated simulations of grounded environments where a Game Master (inspired by tabletop role-playing games) is responsible for simulating the environment.

if you’re confused about how large language models work this new animation from google deepmind should clear a lot of things up

super excited to annnounce the Melting Pot Challenge!
a goalpost for multi-agent researchers: building socially robust and welfare-optimising agents!
🌈❤️✌🏾
Together with colleagues from @GoogleDeepMind and @MIT, we're excited to announce that the Melting Pot Contest at #NeurIPS2023 is now live! We're offering $10,000 in prizes and $60,000 in additional support. Sign up here: aicrowd.com/challenges/melti….

I’ve been writing a blog post on collaboration in science – it’s long, but there’s a summary/TL;DR (and a TL;DR of the TL;DR), and some nice photos to look at, too: nadinespy.github.io/posts/20…
Some bits on what it’s about (mostly points from the post’s summary):

Not a bad place to read a bit of Ted Chiang’s brilliant Exhalation in preparation for our conversation on Friday afternoon, as part of #ALIFE2023 in Sapporo 2023.alife.org/programme/pub…
I’m stepping down from the board of directors.
I have been at _such_ a low capacity for quite a while now, and at this time feel it important to make room for others that may be better able to lead DMG towards and through some difficult but necessary changes.

Watching @DaftLimmy play my friends @cloakanddaggerg and @WadjetEyeGames 'The Excavation of Hob's Barrow' and who should I see but Sydney from The Slaughter, and he's brought the bar with him😅
