If the GOP was really the party of business, give everyone healthcare, and we will start small businesses *tomorrow.* I can’t buy decent insurance on the open market. There’s a whole family underground market underground of diabetes supplies.

Election coverage begins by positing the existence of two parties operating in roughly the same way, but with different ideologies. That picture is the foundation, on top of which consensus practices rest. With the foundation now in ruins, the practices are snapping and breaking.

Had been keen on seeing the 2017 solar eclipse since, like, 2013… and somehow managed to relocate my family to the PNW (within day-trip distance of the path of totality) with just *two weeks* to spare 🗓️😎 #planning

Well, it took 29 years, but I finally watched the original Jurassic Park, a cautionary tale about understaffing your engineering department and letting people push code directly to prod.

Full moon in October, so I’m watching _An American Werewolf in London_ and once again admiring this transformation scene from *1981*! 🌕🐺
Watching _Dracula_ (1931) It’s overall stodgy and slow, by today’s standards 😞 But the actor playing Renfield is running away with the show 👏🤪
Watched _The Ring_ for the first time in years, and noticed some familiar western-Washington scenery (eg. Deception Pass) Looked up shooting locations, and it seems the climactic “Shelter Mountain Inn” was filmed at a camp within a few hundred *yards* (yards!) of my house 😬
Amsterdam’s plan to remove 11,200 parking spaces from its streets by the end of 2025 is even more inspiring when we realize the kind of people places that are possible where cars used to be. Example — #Amsterdam’s Elandsgracht between 2014 & 2019, via @schlijper’s great pics.

So many of Colbert’s personal grief anecdotes hit close to home for me. Most of all the “Is that a true story?” reflection. If the only other person who was there with you for that moment is gone forever, you can never *really* be sure… #FuckCancer overcast.fm/+7-bFEq6yY

Today in class I had occasion to repeat one of the best ever insights about the press. Sir Harold Evans: "The challenge of the American newspaper is not to stay in business; it is to stay in journalism."

"Auditory processing" is the trendy way to refer to it, but put plainly: I'm quite bad at understanding human speech. I realized I was bad at this only recently, but it makes some of my quirks make sense in hindsight. A thread on 3 ways being a bad listener has changed my life🧵
