When the mid-afternoon surge of higher dew point air moved onshore with the seabreeze, one cell got strong around Wrightsville Beach. The storm near the community of Landfall (just west of WB) produced small hail. Hail video courtesy Seth Perry.

This satellite image shows the southern edge and extent of the widespread snowfall across the Southeast. Clouds are seen off the coast in the Atlantic waters, but over the land it shows the snow on the ground.

Lastest from the unofficial snowfall reports in the area.
There's a lot of drifting snow so harder to get measurements.

Today marks the official start of "Meteorological Fall" (September through November). A look back at August in #Wilmington... it was a cooler than average month (avg 2F below normal) with only a couple days far above average. Rainfall was around 1.5" below average for the month.

Most of the month of August high temperatures fell below or near average. For the last day of the month, that pattern continued. Highs reached the lower 80s, 4 degrees below the average.
A similar pattern will continue at least for the first few days of September.

Models are still showing Erin to stay well offshore but Erin will be very large in size. Not much change to the cone.
Biggest impacts to the Cape Fear are dangerous surf and high risk for rip currents through the work week.

Last night, the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron flew into the eye of Hurricane Erin—and captured imagery of the breathtaking stadium effect.
These missions provide critical data to the NHC to improve forecasts, helping keep communities safe before the storm makes landfall.#readynow #weatherready

TROPICS UPDATE:
Hurricane Erin rapidly intesified overnight to a category 4 hurricane.
The majority of the models have Erin turning to the N/NW and well offshore of the coast.
This could change.
Biggest impacts right now are dangerous rip currents and high surf.

With much of the Cape Fear in drought... it is a very good thing to see rain chances every day in our 7day forecast. Latest WPC outlook shows a potential of 2.5 to 3 inches of rain relief.
